I have kept logs of my car for the last couple of years and this last month has made me a believer that if you go over 300rwhp the stock intercooler must go.

THe first thing I noticed were much cooler IAT temps , less pressure drop and the biggest surprise was the ability to develop boost at idle? Now I blip the throttle 2-3 times and I can build 7 psi of boost..........

I have been amazed by my findings so far.

But then again those are just my humble opinions.....
Care to share some details of your IC and how and where it is mounted?

That one is a 3.5 x 12 x 18.

I was thinking of going 5x12x18 or a 5x18x18............. chickened out. I was too worried about the lag factor.......... I went to do some logging tonight at had full boost at 3083 rpm. So no issues with lag. (Running Vitesse stage 2)

You have to cut........ not for the faint at heart. We braced up the front rails and all is well.

If you are afraid of cutting.......I would pipe it under the support like TIM does on the SFR unit. Frankly any intercooler should fair better than the stock one. I have yet to see an aftermarket intercooler perform worse.

Alex: That thing is huge. Any concerns with engine temps due to restricted airflow through the radiator with that set up?

While on the intercooler topic, does anybody have any experience with the lindsey upgrades to the stock intercooler?

That may be a possibility for your 928 Kevin, if you don't want to go custom.

Does anyone know what the largest IC size we can fit in our cars without being jammed in there to tight?

I'd be interesting in knowing about that as well.

Here is a picture of my latest ic.
This core is the same as Alex's, except it's 1/2 inch thicker.
In this picture, the mounting is finished.
All the bodywork fits perfectly on top.

Default INtercooler WIP

Here a picture of my intercooler WIP. This is about the largest one that could be fitted in. It is based on a Bell core, 18x18x3,5. Tanks will be custom fabricated

On a hot day the OEM intercooler heat soaks with my current 300+ HP track car, we have seen temperatures of 170+. Hope it is not going to happen with this monster.

As to blocking the radiator, out local specialist claims the temps will not increase with more then 5 C. We will compensate that with completely ducting the airflow through the hood.

I agree - this is what I have done also.

Hehe, it's a good thing you didn't go that large! Generally, in my experience, much over a ~3-3.5" thick core and the rear half of the core is significantly less effective at cooling. Going with something like 5" thick would be a waste of time as opposed to simply going with say a longer or taller core since you'd have more total surface area.

ST, thanks for responding to my PM. Just fyi but, I'm copying you and using the same IC. I'm getting lazy and after seeing that pic it just appears to fit too well! Thank god for Asia and Ebay. $160 IC + $80 for 6 aluminum pipe bends, 6 reinforced couplers, and a bag full of T-bolts is nice for a change and cheaper than an end tank mod!
