Default Toyo Proxes RA-1 tire sizes

I've got 16" wheels, 8" and 9" wide, front and rear respectively.

I'm planning on going with 225/50ZR16 for the front wheels.

On the rears.. I'm not so sure. Should I go with 245/45ZR16 or 255/50ZR16?

The 255 is .8" wider (according to the link below), but its also 1.4" bigger diameter than the 245 (due to the larger sidewalls).

If I go 245 for the rear, the fronts and rears will have approximately the same diameter.

Thoughts on pros/cons of the 245/45 vs 255/50 tires?

Oh and by the way, I just noticed that on that site, its listed as "P255/50ZR16", whereas the others don't have a "P" at the beginning.

p should just be perimeter...or something. I would do the 255/50s personally on an 9.

The 8" wide wheel is up front.. the rear is 9" Finding wide tires for 16" wheels is hard.

EDIT: I see that you changed your post now..

Go with 245's up front on the 8's and 255's on the rears with the 9's. I have used just about every combo available and I would go smaller than 245's all around. Our cars may be well balance but the like to push and having the extra meat up front helps. I used 255x17 and 275x17 on 8.5" and 10" x 17 wheels last year which worked out very well.

ivai - I was faced with the same options,

I found two types of tires - pure street low performers and race.

To complicate matters I wanted a track tire that was treaded deep enough for rain use.
Found only one - Hankook rs212.

be sure to buy a trie for your use. After extensive research I found nearly every available tire in my size 245/45 was a severe performance compromise or race only.

have no high expectation for mileage, but that is the only drawback I identified

I am glad to hear those sized worked well. I plan on ordering 255/275 later this week for my new 9"/9.5" X 17 wheels.

"P " simply signifies a tire for Passenger car usage - you can ignore it.

I'd be curious to know what appears to be quite a large differentiation in front to rear diameters will do. Sounds like Skip may have an idea? You guys still can't get the newer Toyo R888's yet huh? Also an excellent tyre and you may have greater choice in sizes? Having said that, what events do you compete in? Can you go up in wheel size? 17's or 18's give you much more to chose from.

255/50 will affect your gearing, already pretty high in a stock 951, and they are going to change the balance of the car as well, you don't want the *** up in the air.Don't know if your concerned about your speedo reading either.

Agreed... I'd be careful of the 255/50s... they also weigh more and whilst they are wider in overall width - with their higher profile, you may find there is actually very little tread width advantage, the site you posted did not say.

Yep, to echo the last couple posts - go 245/45s on both the front 8s and rear 9s. A 255/50 is too tall a tire for the Turbo gearing. Any slight advantage of having another 10mm tire width is more than offset by the decrease in acceleration due to the larger tire diameter (adversely affecting the final drive gearing).

Agreed - I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize the 255's had such as large aspect ratio when I recommend those for the rear.
