Too bad you guys missed it. There was a packed track, a ton of cool 944 cars, a rolled BMW, drift cars, beautiful weather, a few rennlisters, plenty of ride alongs, and a nerdy looking bastard with mustard on his shirt learning how to drive his car. It was a good day and "almost" all of us were running at the end of the day. Maybe KP will post some pics.

Yeah I agree, only 5 out of the 6 that were at the track lapped me twice. The other guy could only lap me once.

I think I won though, the guys in the stand and corners kept throwing flags for me and shaking his fist like I was in victory. I saw some black in the flags and I think I saw some white in it but the sun was in in my eyes so I'm sure it was there. I waited around for the trophy but Fed Ex must have lost it or something. Cool part was my new in-car communication worked great and I could hear the passenger's screams without outstanding clarity. Next time I'm going to drive the Navigator so the guys in the Geo's think twice about passing me on the inside.

I would have loved to be there, but I was in Greer skiing.

Joe,

Where did you stand to get those pictures? I'm planning on doing the event on 5/5. I'm thinking about pulling double duty that day as I want to get my 951 sorted/adjusted on the track but really need more seat time in the Z. I'm not sure how realiastic that is at this point.

Pictures were taken in the corner worker station in Turn 5.

Not taken by me however.

Looks like fun.
I did get to tour and lap the new FIA approved Eagles Canyon Raceway though. It will be nice and only 40 miles from my dads place in Texas. I also had lunch with the partners of Ruf. One of them is building a lowley 951 racecar, he talked about it in depth at lunch then got into his bright green 997 RUF VIN 911.

Yeah,it was a great day. I particularly had fun learning about how a 944 engine responds to being shifted into 3rd gear at over 100 mph. First there is a loud bang as your pistons slam into your exhaust valves and then everything gets very quiet as you coast to the side of the track. At least I had a trailer to take the car home on. But I did have a great time chauffeuring Kevin and KP around and waving to Jeremy as we went by his fat *** Chevy. I also enjoyed an up close and personal moment with a Porsche 996 twin turbo with KP in the car during a passing drill. The driver posted a clip of our close encounter on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whOzHZNp7yo

Looking at the clip,I guess if you were driving a $150,000 car it would seem a little close.

By the way, I had the engine checked today and it doesn't look too bad. I bent at least 3 valves but other than that it doesn't look like the engine is hurt too bad. I'll know more tomorrow when the head comes off. I don't know if it will be done in time for comp school on Mar 25 but if not I'll find something else to drive.

That's a real shame.......I would have lent you my "Fat *** Chevy" had you not insulted me. You would have been less hurtful if you told me my wife had a fat ***.

BTW, it appears we'll have a full shop and schedule at my house this weekend. KP's getting a new suspension, your car will get the leakdown done, we need to install a wideband, get the e-brake and rear calipers back on my 951, do some body work on the spec car, get the NA motor on an engine stand, prepare my 3.0L for machine work, and get some of my "spare" parts up for sale.

Hmmm, no work on the "fat *** Chevy".

That happened to Mickey Dowling (#53) in the Feb event. Got 3rd gear at the end fo the oval instead of 5th. A bunch of us have done that too. Vince Vaccaro (#10) grenaded the clutch in doing that. Rick Morris (#49) and I both got luck and never finished releasing the clutch when we did it and spared the valves.

Best advice 2 things.
1) New shift lever. Those pins wear down and cause sloppy shifting. This makes it easier to hit 3rd instead of 5th.
2) shift only when you get on the main straight. I did mine when I was trying to shift right before I went straight. I was still cornering hard and wanted to shift right at 6k. Instead now I just run it to 6200 and wait till I am straight. Nice thing is that you don't gain much speed so that 200 rpm goes a long way to getting you down the main straight thus making the shift much safer.
