AZ emissions testing time EDIT: I passed!
So it's time I take in my car for emissions testing. Does anyone know how strict Phoenix Metro testing is compared to, say, California? I'm worried about not passing. Here in Phoenix, testing is done by "IM 147" where speeds are increased and decreased on a dyno, testing readings over the entire band; Tucson only does the 25mph test. My biggest worry is running rich under acceleration and failing. I fart black clouds when I get heavy on the gas.
What are the general causes of failure? How can I avoid failure? I'd assume swapping out my chips for the stock chips would help, especially since Autothority chips run so rich. Or does richness not cause failure? Or can I just dial the boost down to, say, 5 psi or less, thus disallowing heavy acceleration?
I can get a one-year waiver, but it takes one time testing, then a repair/diagnosis at a shop, then retesting, then verification that a second repair will cost over $450 to get the waiver. Sounds like a PITA to me.
The easiest thing to do would be to not register the car here until I rebuild the motor this summer, but I doubt that'll fly

You'll pass with ease. The test here won't even get you into boost and they don't go over 3k. I've passed on Autothotity's, Guru's, and Vitesse chips with ease. Actually, I've never had a 951 (or any car) here fail. Just be sure it's warmed up.
Since you're new to the area, you should get together with us on a weekend. There's about 10 to 12 of us that get together almost every weekend. Most of us are going to be at PIR on the 3rd and we'll have soem "ride along's". Just now sure what car I'll be driving yet because I need to crank down and get the 951 alignment done.

I had my stock 951 fail Az emissions when I shut it off waiting in the test line. I did that only once. After that I made sure the engine was warm and I never shut it off. I have had the car since Feb 1997 and that was the only issue. Jermey is right in that when they test it they shift at 3,000 rpm or lower and never get into the boost.
BTW... the 944 spec guys will be back at PIR racing on the 3rd & 4th of March. We should be in the north end of the main paddock.

Even though I have had my car almost 3 years I have yet to do the AZ emissions test. I got out of it because when I had registration due I was in Michigan and they have no emissions testing facilities. I pay $9.50 and I get an exemption, that sure was nice...in fact I have never been to an emissions test. The Chevelle was exempt.
Sounds like fun at PIR. Joe gives a real good reason to get into 944 spec racing. As soon as you ride in it you are trying to figure out where you can find a 944 in good mechanical shape with a ratty interior. And if Jeremy's "ride along" is on the track I dont know what to think.

I passed! Very surprisingly so. I was even more shocked to see the numbers:
tested/acceptable (grams/mile):
HC: 0.38/1.60
CO: 6.01/15.00
NOX: 1.63/2.50
There was a beautiful black slantnose right in line behind me. I don't know who it is, but I wrote "http://forums.rennlist.com" and "dime1622" on the back of a business card, gave it to a worker at the station, and told him to hand it to the guy.

Those numbers are right in line with what I normally see on my cars. Ironically, my car with MAF, 55lb injectors, 3.0 bar FPR, Vitesse turbo, and a bad tune give about the same results and in most cases better then stock. By upgrading I'm actually cleaning the air......

Similar to that - didn't get a look at the wheels, and the car had leather covers over the mirrors. You know the owner?
