Vr1 needs to be changed more often, due to fewer detergents. Each individual synthetic is created with various "recipe's" depending on the individual brand and what it's formulated for. Keep in mind, as everyone should when the ZDDP issue comes up. The new standard uses less zddp because it causes premature clogging of modern catalytic converters. I have no cat, so I use VR1 plus a ZDDP additive.

Yes, it can get as cold as a witches tit here in the winter but I run it all year and have great oil pressure with zero leaks (PS fluid, notwithstanding). I've always run a lighter viscosity oil in all of my vehicles and 20W50 is just too damn heavy, IMO.

I would say, too, that one doesn't need like a 20W50 in cooler climates. (I run a mix of redline 10W30 and a diesel oil pretty much all year round)
But, I'd say running 5W30 in the summer would be too thin and asking for trouble. Furthermore, that regular royal purple stuff (non XPR) is no better than any of the usual modern car synthetic oils you can find at your local walmart which all have low zddp levels.
I too have wiped out a cam and lifters and learnt my lessen with using proper oils for our cars.

Even here, in Florida, I change to a more appropriate winter weight oil. 20w50 turns to mollases in 30 to 40* weather.

If that's the case with the Royal Purple synthetic (I'm pretty sure it's a non XPR), I'm going back to Lucas' racing synthetic - thanks for the heads up!

Just curious what you guys are running for a ZDDP additive? I have ran across Rislone w/ ZDDP

http://www.barsproducts.com/4401.htm

I have ran most recently some old school Kendall GT-1 (original Green Oil) in the Callaway 944 before Kendall was bought up by ConocoPhillips. So essentially Kendall used to be the now BradPenn oil.

I use a product called ZDDPlus. It's sold by LR.

With Brad Penn Racing oil you don't need to add ZDDP. I get it for $5 a quart and it seems to work well. Only problem is my car leaks oil I need to figure that out.

The brad penn is good stuff and so is amsoil and redline. You can't go wrong following the recommendations in the manual for viscosity.
