The 944/928 was plagued from almost day one being in the shadow of the 911. The Cayman is the current casualty.
1988 - 1989 were great years for the water pumpers. Especially after Road & Track released the “Top Speed” shootout where the 951S & 928S4 beat the 911 Turbo in most categories (I have the original issue). What happened after that? The 951 was axed, the 16V 4-cylinder was never fully developed, neither was the 928 motor. There is evidence Porsche was planning a boosted 928 in 85-86, it never happened.
To think 250bhp was the limit Porsche could reach with the 951, even when taking into account long term reliability, is not having much faith in Porsche. Even the 944S was held back to fill a gap between the 944 & 951. A gap nobody knew existed until the 944S hit the streets.
It’s a shame really, the 911 had so many performance limitations the rest of the family was held back. Now don’t go telling the 911 crowd I said that, I’m in enough hot water around here.

There is a small article that resurfaces here every now and then, I think I have a copy at home, that is a journalist describing his experience with a 951 on the Autobahn.
He picked up the 951 at the factory where even the man signing hte car over to him, alluded to the fact it was not a standard 951.
The journalist proceeds to out run a Ferrari 512 on the autobahn with it. He never knows how strong it was nor the modifications.
Considering how easy it is to get reliable power from the 951, it is hard to imagine that it's restrictions were not intentional.

It's really a shame when you look back on Porsche history. Can you imagine how far the 928/944 would have gone if Porsche had axed the 911 when they wanted to or at least talked about doing?
We would have seen 350+hp 951's and 500+hp 928's from the factory. The twin turbo 928 motor used in a prototype 959 alluded to the possibilities.

Could you scan and post that article from Road & Track?
Yea, I read the Autobahn article and I would assume that 951 the guy drove was in the 350-400+hp range.

964 turbos had still that time stoneage K-jetronic systems. I have wondered why didn't Porsche adopt motronic to 964 turbos.

You figure the 512 has 340hp and only weighs 200-300 more than the 951. So obviously the car was not "factory" specs.
I wonder if the 951 was just able to run a lot more revs than stock or if it really made a lot more power overall.
I wonder if the "the Blue S 192mph" has different gearing or just runs to 7,500-8,000 revs?????
If his was almost 7K and running strong, then I wouldn't be suprised if the 192mph one was stock gears an just a LOT more revs.

That article is a great read.
LIL, is looking great in those pictures Paul... Although I think LIL could do with some split rims on her!
Cant wait until you get her on the dyno so I can put the way she runs into numbers in my head.... All I know is she pulls harder than any 944 I have been in before... and to be honest she pulls a LOT harder than a 996 turbo, but with much more smoothness... its all good.

I've been doing a little digging on Google and as far as I can ascertain the RUF Yellowbird with over 450bhp came on exactly the same size 17" tyres that I am running now. I'm sure you've all seen the Stefan Roser Faszination video round the Nordschliefe and he seemed to have no problems. Of course I did teach Stefan everthing he knows
Have a great New Year everyone
