Default Ticking at start up!

Last week I changed my oil with Valvoline Racing 20/50. Last night I started the engine and heard a loud tick tick tick tick tick and then I guess oil pressure finally built up. What would cause that? I'm not trying to restart a thread on synthetic vs. dyno but I never heard this horrible sound before using Valvoline. I think I'm going synthetic.

Did you just change your oil after the car sat a while? it might be the lifters pumping up if it went away after a little bit.

Hydraulic lifter noise? Once the oil gets up there, it should go away. I wouldn't think the Valvoline is to blame.

That was my thought. Does it sound like it's coming from the top of the cam housing? vary with rpm?

The car is my daily driver but I hadn't driven it since last week.

I couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from, but it did sound like lifter noise.

Interestingly yes it is cold. Last night it was in the upper 40's, I bet that's the answer!

I have a similar sound at start up, and I use 0-40.. It's also been cold here in Michigan, but when I get back to Arizona things should get better?

Bump to what Tim said in post # 2, more than likely.

20-50 is very heavy oil, but it is the CORRECT oil.
It is normal to have lifter ticking on a 1 week startup in 40 f temperature with a fresh change to 20-50.

Streck - 10-30 is too light for a 951. I don't care what the temp. is.
Your bearings will suffer premature wear from lower hot oil pressure.

when i get ice on the windshield, i guess it's time to change the oil, eh?
