What damage can bad motor mounts do?

The oem mounts have been redesigned and are more of a hybrid rubber/solid mount. They dampen vibration well but still (sort of) act as a solid mount. I recommend them over full solid if you'll ever drive on the street.

The Lindsey mounts are not solid. The mounts on my car where shot when I bought it so i'm not sure how stock mounts in good condition feel. The Lindsey mounts are very nice though. They are adjustable so you can adjust the dampning. I have mine set down pretty tight and they aern't harsh at all like a solid mount.

It sounds as if many posts answer the question “what happens if I run without balance shafts”. Motor mounts isolate vibration from the chassis and if they are collapsed some of the vibrational energy is transferred to the chassis, actually reducing the engine vibrations, but making it felt much more.
With busted motor mounts the engine is not well located with a potential of component interference (as “owain” apparently experienced). There is also the potential for chassis cracks around the mount area.

I suffered broken radiator hoses and i/c hoses amongst other things and had to be towed home once so there are many possible ramifications to shot mounts. The Oem's are very good. Watch out for cheap facsimiles as they will wear out in a minute and it's a somewhat p.i.t.a. job to replace them.

Yeah, I know it's not a fun replacement job... I'm gonna get new ones. found some OEM for $117 each, and it's 3 hours billed out to the Porsche dealer... I'm half tempted to send it out to save myself the busted knuckles and 8 hours if I were to do it...

When i first got a 944 (NA) few years back, it had bad motor mounts and ran them for about 1 year. Honestly, i never had anything break or crack off, when they got replaced, i was amazed how smooth the car idled.
Only thing that caused my fuel rail to crack, leak, and the a/c and p/s mounts to break were mis-aligned balance shafts....
Now, these mounts on ebay that go for ~$80-90, are those OEM, or german aftermarket? they claim to be 'made in germany'. but both Porsche and Aftermarket are made in Germany.

Gator knows what he is talking aobut, and while you're there, replace the oring at the back of the lower balance shaft housing disk.

BTW, I just put 900 miles on my rig over the weekend including a great 100-110 mph "slice and dice" through the mountian passes east of San Diego. That damn car pisses alot of people off!
