Default feeler for Carbon Hood. now with estimate price

ok i want to know if anyone is interested in getting a carbon hood. i have a guy who makes carbon products and i have finally convinced him to concider making some for our cars. the more i get the cheaper it gets. it will be a perfect copy of our standard hood, and will be supplied in high gloss carbon finish(which can be painted). if we can all agree on some vents etc that can be done also. it will weigh less then 5kgs. the price i am unsure of yet, he will get back to me on that one. tell me if your interested.

Definitely. I've been told though that they won't be as stable as a steel hood at high speed and will need hood latches. Hard to believe since carbon is five times the tensil strength of steel. Is this true or can we use our factory hood latches?

Also, see what he says about replacing the factory sunroof skin.

i will ask him about the sunroof. that shouldnt be a hard one. although we will need a run of a few to do them.

i am almost sure he said we can bolt the standard latch up to the hood, but i was in a rush. so i will speak to him a in the next few days.

I'd be interested in the sunroof and possibly a hood. How fancy would he be able to go with vent designs? I've been thinking of doing something sort of like an evo's vents, but I'm sure that is more drastic than most people would go for.

thats the problem bill, i really cant see how we would all decide on a design. there cant be any one offs, it would need another mould, and that is where the cost is. lets see some vents we can use. any ideas?

is this what you were thinking of

if we get a vent like that for instance then it can be put into the mould. even a standard CF hood with no vents would look good though. if we were to get vents/cutouts they would need to suit the 951 lines, im not sure if the evo bonnet would do that. can anyone photoshop?

Joe, I'd use hood pins on any cf/fiberglass hood. It's a cheap safety mechanism considering the damage that could happen if the hood flys up at 150mph! There are aftermarket hoodpins that are very discreet (such as recessed key lock hood pins) if the looks were the main deterrent. I think one of the main issues is with attaching the hood latch in a way that would be as strong and stable in comparison to the stock hood's being welded on. Most of the cf/fg hoods I've seen for various cars have the latch bonded in with some type of glue/fiberglass mix. I doubt if that stuff would be as strong as a weld.

Yeah, I agree with the evo vent design not working at all with the lines. The vent I've been thinking of was more of the evo vent's function, and not really design, in that the vent would basically create a clear route for the air to go through the intercooler and the directly out of the engine bay (sort of what race cars do with the large vents in the hoods to get cooling for radiators). That's just my pet project though, so I can understand not doing that with the hood.

How much do you think shipping these parts from australia would cost?

i can find out about the shipping. i would want to send it some sort of express with tracking numbers etc. i dont really trust australia post. too slow and too many of our parcels have been lost. i like your idea. i think we should do that, so that we get a benifit of not only weight but also cooling. give me some pics of what you like.

Here's one idea about some basic louvers to give you an idea as to how they would look. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...oler+hood+vent

As for the intercooler vent, I was thinking something to the extent of the 968 turbo rs hood vent. The 968 also had some underhood ducting to ensure that the vent was only pulling air from the intercooler and not the engine bay, so that would be some other work, but the pics should give you the basic idea.

The underhood ducting:

Here was a less-fancy version on a 951 race car - I think I'd personally lean towards something like this because it isn't as obvious as the 968 vent.

Now obviously if you were to do the ducting under the hood it would require some fancy work to keep the flip-up headlight mechanisms, so thats another thing to take into consideration. Also having a centered vent like that would mess with the underhood bracing (the one bar that runs down the center), so that may require some extra custom work to get around that.

Some good ideas but I have always found that one in the RS to look like some sort of wound. It is probably functional but it is not pretty. However the naca ducts have always appealed. I know they perform almost the opposite function but I'd be more inclined to something a little more subtle and the hood pins look great in my estimation. Having said that if it's a matter of getting at least 10 for a run then I'm in no matter what...

Yes I've always liked them although they don't do anything to remove hot air I guess. Maybe we should do a big 'Shaker' off a GTHO huh. That would impress our mates in the U.S. lol
Hey is that true what I heard about our P-club? Interesting times ahead.

Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever get it as low as that.
$475 shipped is very cheap. What's it like?
