Bret,

Obviously not for this run, but is there any possibility of doing some 100.5 NA pistons? While I still have the turbo (it's listed for sale in the classifieds), I'm in the process of building a NA to race next year, including a spare/fresh motor, and am beginning to explore piston possibilities....

Ok, I am NOT posting this to start a fight, just an FYI since we are still trying to figure out what happened.
Few years ago we had 3 sets of Iron Ferocoat pistons made by Mahle - what happened is under the "DISCLAIMER" portion of this thread:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/271335-6-1-liter-stroker-short-block-for-sale.html

Due to the issues with that motor, our engine builder started on the 427 project in my signature as a better way to go.
Again, I'm posting this to maybe gain some information, not stir up trouble. If we can figure out what went "wrong" with the initial build of this motor, we have one more waiting assembly we woud like to use.

Don, I can certianly ask. I think there are some NA sets out there, reasonably priced as well. I recently saw a set on ebay for $600 but I'll inquire, glad to do it.

Not sure on Ferrocoat - the process presently used is Ferroprint, same coating that Heritage uses on the 968 turbo pistons with great success.

The dish volume on these was enlarged to keep the same factory OEM compression. With the lighter weight all that has been done is balance of the piston and rod assembly.

Not sure what went wrong, I suspect, just suspect, cylinder wall tolerance, as tightening it up does nothing for performance. Mahle has recommended .020mm clearance, ex: pistons for 100.5 are 100.460 at 5mm above the skirt bottom and with the tolerance of .020(around), you have a 100.5 bore, that's what's been used as a guide for bore/finish, related the piston expansion as per Mahle.

One of the engines assembled last year, actually made about 8 more hp than he expected on the engine dyno, limited to .85 bar for whatever class he was in. The car suffered a crash in the second race, so the engine came out and he emailed me last week and the bores and pistons were as new.

We have used (our track car) TomC pistons, 3 years now, and the car is great and that was with his coating. Jim built his 2.8L with TomC pistons, used Swain on the skirt and gold thermal coat on top; that engine is 2.5 years old. The recommended tolerances were used with those pistons as well, althought we thought the 2.8L tolerance was a bit overkill, Arias stuck to their guns and the engine has been flawless. Good luck with your investigation in to whatever happened.

Thanks Bret. Trying to get an idea of all the options (and the '07 Rules) before deciding on a direction.

Don, you have a PM

order is gone! I'll email everyone last of Dec or early Jan with status. Those of you who've discussed blocks going to San Antonio or Corpus Christi, hold them until pistons ship and then we'll organize this offline, as we've discussed already.

So, how many engines are we going to do this winter? What are you going to do with that spare in your garage - 100.5 bore, o-ringed block, ARP studs, LR oil pan kit, teflon coated main and rod bearings, - is is collecting dust?

You quite working on that damn 930 and we can get something done

At least two to do and that spare is covered up, "blacky" is running just perfect but you never know what might happen if I decide to paint.

All the ring sets are in, pistons are on schedule for second/third week of January to be shipped out to me. I will then put ring sets with pistons, double check the gram chart against piston number and align the sets - then ship. Regards.

Holidays slowed them down a bit but here's an update.
from Mahle:
"pistons have a scheduled finish date of 02/02/07 and everything looks good so far. "

So a few days to get to me then I'll match the weights, email everyone, check accounting $$, and ship out. I'll email everyone from Yahoo as before.

We may have one of our sets available but one is going in the spare engine for the track car, the other set has a committment but one set is "iffy" so it may be for sale. I should know middle Feb about that set.

I have an OEM set of 100.5, just came back from Swain and the rings(1/2 a race old from new, when the car was flipped) and I'm awaiting a call from Sunset on a complete new set of factory rings, if available.
