Porsche Guru's-
I recently purchased an early 1985 Porsche and am currently looking to restore.
Found oil in the coolant tank, something comparable to a milkshake. Top hose runs hot, and bottom hose runs cold, because the thermostat was stuck shut with this gunk. I'm almost possitive that the head gasket is the problem, and am wondering how many hours are involved with replacing this gasket. I am trying to save money on labor, and am wondering the process by which I should pursue this endeavor, or even whether it is worth the time.
Has anyone sucessfully changed a head gasket on this type of vehicle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a die-hard Porsche lover, and this is my first one.
Thank's in advance to anyone who can offer any advice or feedback on the matter.

My money is on the oil cooler seals. they go bad often, and it mixes oil and coolant VERY quickly. if you're going to do a head gasket anyway, do the oil coolers while you're in there. it's a safe deterrent even if it's not the problem...and it'll be a hell of a lot easier with the exhaust manifold off the car.

Oh, and headgaskets, I'd say on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being insane difficulty, and 1 being so easy a baby could do it in it's sleep, it falls in at about a 6 or 7. just take your time, make sure it's at TDC, and go for it. Also, do a water pump if it's crammed up with crap like you say it is.

How many hours of labor am I working with? Do I absolutely need to take the engine out of the car, because I live in an area where there are fines for that, but if I keep it in the hood, everything is good.

no need to take the engine out. I'd give it 2 full days if you've never done it before. just so you take your time and make sure not to screw it up. it's easy to do if you're not careful. (head gasket. oil cooler seals are cake... it's just getting to them thats a bitch)

Good luck. get the parts first if you can. www.clarks-garage.com has instructions for both the head gasket and the oil cooler seals.

Parts, I go for www.pelicanparts.com or www.paragon-products.com . a Porsche dealer will not have these in stock... at least no Colorado dealer carries these things regularly.
