It is about a 10-12 beer job, definately don't drink all of them at once though, and especially not before you start

Job requires removal of the crossover pipe and crossmember. Depending on year and configuration you may find it is better to remove the intake manifold, and drop the crossover and headers all together (unbolt wastegate, remove header studs, detach from the turbo and drop the whole assembly out the bottom). That is pretty much how I did mine when I had to flip a set of piston rings over, but I also had to take the head off. Also, find somewhere secure to hang the engine from.
Without calculating it, I would say it took me 25 hours to flip my rings over, so for just rod bearings maybe 15?

I did rod bearings on a N/A in just shy of 5 hours once, but that is so much simpler.

My tech says that all he has to do is remove the cross member, rack and pinion and oil pan to get to it from under the car, but I am still wondering how many hours it would take to do that

Does he know about the crossover pipe?
There is NO way to get the oil pan off with the crossover pipe on. It has to come several inches straight down.....

I would estimate 15-20 hours of shop time to change the rod bearings. Of course, always mic the crank when you have the rod caps off, make sure that all you need are rod bearings.

Yes, I forgot to mention crossover pipe, he thinks all I need is rod bearings because of the ticking sound he heard. My other tech thinks it's a lifter, who really knows??

Official labor time (Mitchell/Snap-On):
Oil pan gasket remove and replace = 11.8
Connecting rod bearing replace (one)= 0.5
Connecting rod bearing replace (each additional)= 0.3
Total= 13.2 Hours

And usually a lifter problem would cause a tapping noise whereas a rod bearing would cause a knock (knock, bang, ka-boom).

If your tech actually heard a ticking sound coming from the bottom end of the engine, it is safe to say that you'll need more that rod bearings! You may want to get a second opinion before you lay down your money. In any case, the job takes about 14 hours, assuming that there are no rusted/stripped bolts, which is hardly ever the case. Good luck.

Okay, let's run over this.....
Tick - lifter, don't sweat the rod bearings yet....
Knock - rod bearing, if you hear rod knock it's too late, you will need more than rod bearings
Typically you will also see low hot oil pressure when you have had rod bearings.

I wonder what it could be, oil pressure is at 3 on idle, always between 4 and 5 driving, never goes below 3, one guy said it might be a lifter, another said it sounded like a rod bearing. I would describe the noise as a tapping or ticking more than a knock, car pulls strong and everything, boost is at 12 psi max...

Don't wonder, decide
If it's ticking it is most likely top end.
Bottom end noise is a knocking sound that will make you sick to your stomach. Very hard to mistake for anything else.

Tapping or ticking = top end 99% of the time. Have a listen to it with a stethescope, decide for yourself.
