Who in their right mind would do something stupid like that? It would be like asking if anyone has converted their Ferrari to propane. So the short answer is NO and the long answer is ****ing NO.

If I could get one of the 5 or 6 cyl. euro models, sure! I'd run it on veggie oil too, but that's just me. Fuc#ed up thing about it is that I couldnt smog it here. Most of what I have thought of was adapting the VATN turbocharger(s) to a 951 gas application. I'd like to find out how to get an A4 Quattro TDI over here for a grocery getter.

Yeah... i'm not really comitted to such a plan. I just ask about stuff like this before even taking the idea seriously. I have a 944S, it's just that I'd get more responses in a shorter period of time here in the 951 forums.
I read an article in GRM about a TDI Beetle that made 400ft/lbs at the wheels with a only minor modification. Some kind of trickery with the injectors and the ECU. Didn't make alot of top end, though.

I looked into this a couple of years ago.
I posted here and got flamed, then I posted on TDIClub and got flamed there too.
Here's the skinny on it.
Buy an 944 with a nice body and blown engine. Don't bother paying for a running one when you are going to rip the engine out.
Here is what you will need.....
The 1.9L TDI from a passat, or an I-5 or V-6 TDI.
The passat has a longitudal mount, unlike the transverse mount of the golf, jetta, beetle.
Depending on the engine you get, here are your options.
1.9L/2.5L I-5:
Need custom gearing, or a new transmission of some variety. The I-4 is a MUCH shorter engine, and you will have room to spare for a bellhousing adapter. Take the bellhousing from the 1.9L, and use a VR-6/G60 clutch, with the TDI slave cylinder. You will have to machine the end of the torque tube, or have a custom clutch disc made (the first is the cheaper and better option). After this, all you need is a small adapter plate to mate to the torque tube. You will need to make up a custom front motor mount bracket, it will have to be attached securely to the front crossmember. Don't worry about the accessories, once you install the 1.9L you will find that you have oodles of room. It is amazing how much smaller it is than the 2.5L that porsche builds.
If you use the 2.5L I-5, then you will need to be more creative, since it is 125% the length of the 1.9L, but everything else still applies.
2.5L V-6 TDI:
This engine will cost MUCH more (Read ~$4000), and will have to be imported from europe, but it will mount VERY easily, and fit much better. The engine is less than 22" in overall length, so again you will have space to kill. But, again you will need custom gears.
For the cooling system, swap the lower rad support to the 951 model, and use a 951 or a 944S radiator (or is it S2?). Custom hoses to connect it to the engine, but you will have more than enough cooling capacity.
Rear suspension changes will be minimal, same with front. You can keep the porsche steering rack as well.
I looked into this very deeply, and the end net cost will be ~$8000 regardless of engine type/configuration.
However, you will have a 1 of a kind car when you are done.
The only diesel 9XX series car I have seen was a diesel 924, that ran with an old 1.6L IDI engine. Very slow, but very cool.
If I had $8k to spare, this would be at the top of my project list.
I hope I didn't get too sidetracked and I hope this post makes sense...

In the latest issue of GRM, a kid has built up his TDI Rabbit with simple bolt-ons to have 123hp to the tires.
...and 412ft-lb of torque.
I think it would be a really cool swap if somebody got a junkyard 2.0TDI and made custom mounts and torque tube links.
