Actually I didn't know that - but I just have this thing against diesel...the way they sound, the motors that is. Its just not sexy (at least I haven't heard one that is). I think I was just distracted by the user name Thunderbunny...I get these vivid images of a vampire bunny or something.

( I have a diesel as a daily driver , and getting twice the power out of it cost a lot of $$$ )

If you want a decent diesel car , check out Bmw 535Tds
Wow, I didn't realize Porsche did gain control of VWs stocks. That's so awesome!

However, about the 535Td... where are you finding these things in the US?

Yes , Porsche is the major shareholder in Vw
VW's other main shareholder is the German state of Lower Saxony, which owns an 18.2% stake .

Bmw 535tds is probably not for sale in the US.. ( its a diesel )

Anyway specs are : Engine
6 Cylinder 2993 cm3
compresion 16.50 : 1
Valves pr cylinder 4
Stroke/bore 90 mm/84 mm
560 Nm at 2000 rpm
272 hp at 4000 rpm

A friend of mine got one of these and with some minor tweeks he got 340hp/650nm ~ ..

Sorry for OT ..

Porsche doesn't "own" VW. They do, however, hold a huge stake. They just agreed to purchase more stock to take them just below the German limit for being considered the majority owner. They do or will own 29.9% of VW. At 30% they become responsible for VW legally in a number of ways that they're not interested in.

Also, modern turbo diesels are ridiculously easy to make more power with. We're a long way from the days of BMW 535Tds's. It's much much easier to turn up the boost on a turbo diesel than it ever was before.

And of course as mentioned above, Audi did just win LeMans with a diesel motor.

Everyone here needs to get over their preconceptions on diesels. It's a new world for diesels and the europeans have been living it for years now.

New world of diesels...the previous daily driver I had was BMW 320 dT ( diesel Touring,ie. wagon,E46 ). I just got a new 320 iT ( gasoline Touring,E91 ),and I must say that this newer one, although it's otherwise much better car, is so lame compared to that diesel...same hp but 130Nm less torque...
Modern direct injection diesels have the same hp than gasoline ones with more torque and less fuel consumption.
Audi won LeMans 24 hours last year with a V10 TDI and there's no coming back.

But back to the original subject, install a VW TDI into your 944. Perfect daily driver, with some mods 951 power with 928 torque and astonishing mpg.

Link to a local oilburner: http://www.teamrwd.com/dieselboost/300_24.php

( 3.0l 24v turbodiesel with 425hp...and 1 newton meter = 0.737 562 147 pound foot)

Basically a 500+hp car with 700+ ft-lb of torque... that'll move!

Those figures were on a chassis dyno, right? IE, they were numbers to the tires? What type of transmission did that thing have?

Not to step on any toes, but i think the R10 has a v12 diesel. The v10 your talking about is the one offered in the toureg and some audi SUV's in europe.
BTW, i wouldn't underestimate TDI's my friends. My 01 beetle tdi has the old "distributor" style diesel injection (nothing like the new stuff). I bought a set of injectors for it not too long ago, no smoke, i went from 90hp 155lbs to 110hp and 200lbs of torque. This thing won't just put you back in your seat, it will spin the tires in first if i'm not carefull with the pedal. There are people running with 270lbs and 135hp on tdi club with an ecu reprogram and nozzles, running for 200,000 plus miles with the mods, AND still getting 45-50mpg. I drive this thing daily at 80mph on the highway and have a lead foot everywhere else, i'm getting 44mpg at the last fill up. The newest diesels are running common rail injection with those piezo injectors........ and the newest 2.0 tdi in europe makes 170hp in stock form. I think that 3.0TDI in a 944 would be a very fast setup that could definitely embarras a few egos.

A couple of quick factoids from memory supporting the relevance of Diesels:
50% of new passenger cars sold in EU are Diesels.
US has mandated Diesel fuel with low sulfur content (sulfur kills cats). In other words they’ll soon be coming here en masse … from Europe.

As I said my daily driver is a diesel, but then I don’t live in US either..

diesel is way more where I live so I do not see a benefit to owning a diesel. I do own a 2003 dodge dually, 4x4 and I am putting down 940nm, screw the hp number I just like pulling a fully loaded 3 horse trailer and watching as I can blind someone if I want to with smoke. I red lighted at the track with smoke. Every diesel car I have ever driven drives like a truck. So diesel=truck and gas=car. Easy

Sorry. Thought you meant some of the old 5 series diesels we had in the US.

I'd say that is rwhp, but can't confirm that. There's another car, E-series, with the same OM606 engine, but it has Garrett TO3/4. 299.4kW @ 4229 and 692.97Nm @ 4003 ( 401,5hp / 511lbft ) at rear wheels... ( http://users.utu.fi/ajarol/amsmb/kuvat/teholappu1.jpg http://users.utu.fi/ajarol/amsmb/kuvat/teholappu2.jpg )

Transmission is a MB 5-spd manual and turbo was that Holset HX40.

My daily driver is a 06 VW TDI. The diesels are probably not for everyone. Completely different than my P-cars but in some ways better. It depends a little on how ya measure performance. 45 mpg is a kick. The biggest downside I think might be the dealers - a lot of people seem to hate the VW dealers. I thinks its true though diesels will get more marketshare as people learn about them. bruce

Actually the motor going in the Audi SUV is also a V12

R10: 5.5L V12 TDI: 650 HP & 1100 NM of Torque (811 Ft/Lbs)

Q7: 6.0L V12 TDI: 500 HP & 1000 NM of Torque (728 F1/Lbs)

There are rumors the new Audi R8 Super car is going to get a TDI motor down the road, would be a great tie in to the motorsports program.

But back on topic, while the swap would not be as cost effective as buying a used TDI off a lot some where, if you had to have 944 style with TDI power I say go for it......
