you dont need to change anything on your car exept for the driveshafts and the transmission itself. obviously you will need to hook up the speedo, in which case is much harder on a car without ABS. and the 951 crownwheel and pinion will not fit in a 968 gearbox. they are completly different units. absolutly no chance. and as Thingo said, they are much more precise to use, they do feel like a better box. Thingo has one in his car.

Chris Cervelli ran a 968 gearbox in his 450 HP 944 Turbo GT1 car. It will take the abuse and I think there are more gearing options for it since it uses some G50 parts. I think you can get a 968 case and get custom gears similar all the options for 993's. If you look at the 911's they can gear just about anything they want gear wise so it may be a perfect choice.

The preload on the bearings caused the famous pinion bearing whine at motorway speeds. It is easily fixed by fitting new pinion bearings and setting the correct preload, if indeed you have one of the boxes afflicted with this. I will be looking at either custom gears or a different final drive to make the gears longer for my 3.0 turbo which should be finished this week. The engine is in a 968 so I already have the 968 box but I know it tops out around 160 - 165 in sixth on the limiter and the gears are too close for a turbo street car, maybe ok for a track car looking to max acceleration and spool up. I am interested in any solution with the 968 box that lengthens the gearing and increases top speed as 200 mph is easily attainable with 4-500hp. My target 400-450hp.

There's a very good answer from a highly reputable builder & racer. No brainer, get it!!

Actually, Joe, you're looking for TALLER gears, right? That being the case, I'm not sure Joe's answer will work- I'm not 100% positive, but I DID talk to Powerhaus II about this- they said there were NO TALLER gears available for 968's- only SHORTER!!! Thus, my next question was how much for custom gears- I was told $900/ea originally, but then talked to them a year later & was told that I was drastically misquoted & that it was about DOUBLE that per gear- even if you just changed 5th & 6th, you'd be in it for $3500+. That pretty much assures me that the custom R&P would be better as it would not leave any gearing holes, addressing all of them, & be much cheaper...
Cervelli was a big track guy- he very well might have done dif gears from 911's, or whatever, but most 993's & 996's have very short gears too, so even if they would fit, they might be shorter- Cervelli had the lap record at WSIR for 944's- was sub 1:23 IIRC... He was also running 1600lb springs for awhile until he INCREASED his rates...! He was pretty serious, so he probably shortened gears & did them for specific tracks, when possible...

Yeah, I know Chris, he put in my Koni's back when he had his shop at Technodyne. I think since I already have an 89 Turbo S LSD, I'll just pop the six speed in and call it a day. Everyone Agree? What's with the speedo hook up?

A taller 6th is available, 0.66- I dont know the math but that is pretty high, robby those prices seem a bit excessive, Ive been quoted $1000 for the gears and $2500 for the RP, but there is a lot of labour involved. Those are Australian dollars, because that is where they are made.

Does the LSD from the 951 just bolt into the 968 Tranny? If not, you will have to get a 968 tranny with an LSD. The transmission and differential are all in one on a transaxle car like our 951's or 968's. I get the impression you think they are two separate items. Or were you saying you would look at converting the 951 tranny to a six speed? Can that even be done?

The LSD from the 951 tranny will not fit the 968 6-spd. For the 6-spd you can get the GT3 (maybe GT2) LSD. This is what I did years back.
In order to use the 6-spd in the 951 you need: 6-spd transaxle, L halfshaft (shorter than 951), shift linkage, shift rod.
If you have ABS, you can intercept the ABS signal, use a frequency converter and get the speedometer working.
If you do not have ABS, there is a aftermarket setup (cannot remember the name), where you add a sensor to the halfshaft and send the signal to the speedometer.
I like the 6-spd, the only thing I can do without is the sloppy shifter... Does anyone make a short shift kit for the 968?
