I've been frustred with the sloppy feeling in the shifter of my race car (23000 mile '88 951S) and traced it down to the plastic/nylon shift block piece. It was always mushy but usually by mid race (especially in an enduro) it was challenging to get the car into the right gear at times. I was going to replace it but stumbled into a much better solution.
Stuttgart Motors in Lexington, KY has replicated the piece out of aluminum and it's a vast improvement over the original (see pic below). I put one on while at the Daytona Club Race and the improvement is unbelievable - shifting now has a really nice, mechanical feel and it's the same even at the end of a 90 minute enduro.
I'm not affiliated with Stuttgart...just a happy customer. Feel free to contact Dan either via email (stuttgartmotors@alltel.net) or call (859-255-7424) - you'll be glad you did.
Cheers,
Rick

Hmm. My shifter is loose, and the shift rod at the front is just fine. Interesting to know that this piece also wears out.
Price and contact info?...
Any idea what the price of replacing the original piece is?

Is just the shift block the part for sale? I'm sure it's much more postive than the OE rubber dampened block. I hope they aren't $150 though...that's not much machining if that's the price. Nice looking work and it makes sense. Did you notice any more vibration in the shifter with the solid block?

Good question. I have a short shift kit to put in my 951 but can't find one for my 968 Turbo. I was hoping to get one for the 968 because the shifting feels rubbery. I will have to call Stuttgart to see about one for that car.

Yeah, it looks like a nice piece but how much did it cost? $150 seems a bit steep if that is infact the price.
Do you guys think this will cause any abnormal wear on other parts in the shifter linkage since the plastic piece is being replaced with this aluminum unit?

Sorry, I thought that the shifter was included. If that price is just for the block then I would agree that $150 seem steep. I just bought a set of racers edge bushings and they were expensive but I don't know if they were that expensive.

Hello, my name is Daniel, and I am the service manager here at Stuttgart Motors in lexington. I will be happy to answer anyones questions that they may have about our shift block.
First let me say that our shift block will fit the following: 924, 924s, 944, 951, 944s, 944s2, and 968. Will not work on 924's with the 016-Y or Z, 5speed trans.
Second the kit never sold on ebay for around $150. We retail this for $78.95 and includes detailed instructions, shift block, spring clip, and lock nut. Does not included the linkage.
Third, the block should technically never wear out, but if it does, that should take longer than the life of several cars. Its billet aluminum, so should last for a very, very long time.
If anyone has any other questions, please feel free to email at StuttgartMotors@alltel.net You may also call at 859-255-7424 or 859-255-7278. We also now have our website up and running which can be visited at www.stuttgartmotorsports.com
Also, we have designed the first PCA approved hubs from billet aluminum.
