There is a heat shield between the turbo and the lower u-joint on the intermediate shaft to the steering rack. What is the heat shield protecting from heat? Isn't the u-joint all metal?
I ask because I'm considering not reinstalling the heat shield. Is this a bad idea?

Running without a heat-shield will shorten the life of the u-joint, the only question is by how much?

I wouldn't be as concerned with the U-joint as I would be the brake booster and master cylinder. I'm sure both get hotter with the shield out, especially on a track car.
Having said that, I don't run one.
