Being that I own a 951 and 2.5 928s, I'm a little biased on who I defend, but I think both groups are full of pretty cool people.
We both own Porsches and love the crap out of them, and in person, I've seen the differences between the people. Really no difference. You have your ___ model snobs, your enthusiasts and car guys (like me), your "Its a porsh, its cool" guys, and I'm sure others, and on both sides.
You go to a 928 forum and imply that a 944 might be faster (at least by the subject line), and expect the hardcore 928 guys NOT to speak up and get defensive? Thats pretty retarded if you ask me.
That would be the exact same thing if someone came on here on the flip side. The hardcore 944 guys would get pissed!

Yes, some of the 928 guys are sensitive, and from my experience with the owners, the 944 crowd is younger. We all know old people can be touchy

I had a chance to meet up with the local 914 guys too since I bought one of those too (I'm on a buying binge, so what), and they are some cool laid-back guys... And guess what, their helpful and friendly demeanors reminded me of the other P-car guys I know, on both sides!
So lets not just generalize, ok?

Bring Lart back!!! That guy did seem like a dick at times, but only if you don't know him I guess. I dont have personal experience with the guy, but he does seem like a wise-***, and we all need one of those for balance . Sounds like he might be back after a 'break' that seems to be imposed on him.

Anyway, just wanted to bring a viewpoint from someone who "lives in both worlds."

Focker, out...

Come to think of it I have only ever 'known' one 928 owner, Brian Dayley(sp), he was my third track instructor, hung out with him a little and talked about cars. Hell of a nice guy, I couldn't quite be able to place him in any 'category', he was just a regular fellow out having fun.

And I did know one 914 fellow, old rigdgerunner form TN like me, we're very laid back.

Rogue
hi Rogue, yes, he was meaning the 931 gearbox, but only the 1979-1980 'snailshells' with the dogleg 1st gear. Any 931 g/b with a normal H pattern is an audi ( 944 n/a) g/b. I cant remember if the carrera gt and subsequent models got the G31 but I believe they did.

they are a getrag/ porsche concoction using mostly 930 internals but there are a few things uniquely 931.

Theyre strong as hell but have weak synchromesh in 1st and 2nd which leads to destroying 1st and 2nd and its 1st that iirc thats different from the 930.
Its generally excepted on the 924board that they are far stronger than the 944 g/b and 'talk' that it surpasses the 951 g/b. Not only that, they are lighter and more compact than both too.
But the unavailabilty and cost of parts to repair its common issues means that some change to the 944 style transaxle for less stress motoring

there is someone currently making gears though:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=19594

and just for trivia, heres a small camera phone vid of a 944 carrera gtr located in Singapore: http://www.trackdaymedia.com/misc/gtr2.mov

931 gearbox is Getrag G31. Carrera GT/S/R used also this gearbox but slightly modified.
Actually this gearbox is not based on 930 internals stock (it uses 915 internals) but can easily be modified to use 930 pieces.
In stock form, G31 can withstand 450-500hp easily. And yes, it does look more suitable for Porsche when mounted (gearbox is in "right" place: in front of diff, not behind it :P) .

I thought Lart was amusing and seemed harmless enough.

I thought his comments seemed less aggressive on that particular post than Adam C's

Lart's preceding posts

People get the feeling that I don't like the 928's, please understand that I think they are an amazing machine fast, luxurious and beatiful, I might get me one when I reach 55.
46 here 6" 4, 290lbs we can meet any time, just don't dare me, someone allready did back in the 944 forums and I went to pay him a visit at his job and he was quite surprised. lol
I was abused as a child please forgive me. Anyway I am out before it gets out of hand, I didn't started the thread I was just contribuiting to it. Btw I do really love 928's. You guys better relax, I don't want any of you to get a heart attack or a stroke due to the intense drama.

Have a great day

Lart.
Adam C's preceding posts

All this BS confirms what I already knew: The 944 crowd are a bunch of teutonic ricers. Maybe one day you guys will be able to graduate up to the big boy table.
Funny guy. I'm 6'3 and 220. Love to meet you by the bike racks after school.

Anyways, the 928 was the flagship while it was in production, and the 944 was the entry model for the marque. Go debate that.
Anyway - seems a bit uptight to me. I think the moderator just sending them both a pm to tone it down might have been fairer than banning Lart?

Although I did love seeing how the threats didn't need to be veiled if they were purely on the car topic! Here's a page 5 post from The Tool getting in their face early!

Well - this is a great thread.

I still have no choice but to declare that I will leave ANY 928 on the boards many bus-lengths behind from 100-200K, and at LEAST 1 bus in the 1/4.
And it will be a VERY badass 928 to stay within 1 bus in the 1/4....

flagship?
