Which is faster? 951 or 928?
Which is faster? 951 or 928? Or are they faster than each other in different ways? e.g., the 951 between X-XX mph and 928 between XX-XXX MPH?
Does the 968 rank in this? I'm not interested in Seat of the Pants stuff or "I beat a brand new McLaren" anecdotes...since driver skill makes the difference. What do the published stats say? Anyone recall the stats? I started looking and found them to vary from publication to publication.

Harvey go out on some of those back roads you have. Drive the 928S, get lined up, start from a stop, NAIL the throttle in first take it to red line, catch second take it to redline, repeat till you run out of gears or road or nerves.
Then repeat the process in your 968. Come back and tell US what you think about which is faster.

Like Yoda explained it; the 951 is like the dark side of the force: quicker, more seductive (don't really agree with the second one) while the 928 is like the good side of the force - it always wins in the end.

It's a hell of a lot easier to make a 951 hugely faster than a 928! Wick up the boost and your wallet is now the limit. How fast do you want to go today?
Box-stock? My 928S2 will kill a stock 951, and I have two valves per cylinder. Not to mention far better driveability, and I bet my stock 928 would keep right up with any stock 951 with the same tires on any track you can designate, if the drivers were the same.

13.86 seconds later my 928 is doing 106 mph. But I don't have to worry about going lean and burning a piston-
In traffic: My V8 "jumps" when I downshift. If that's a 951 in the other lane, then about the time his turbo spools up....he can get a good look at my tail lights. That's why I say that V8's have more driveability...
That...and the sound track of the V8 at 6000 rpm is 13 times better than a 951's!

I had a 951 that was worked a bit and it was very fast. Blew off a Ferrarri one day and he was pissed.
I also have driven numorous 928s including 2 turbo 928s.
There are some guys driving some wicked 951s. Put a 2.8 engine bigger turbo chip etc etc and you are running up around 400 + hp in a very nimble and quick car.
A 928 is more of a heavy cruiser. Completely different.
I sold my 951 the first time I had to do some work on it. It is extremely tight. The thermostat is even a bitch to get to.
The turbo is buried under the intake manifold and very hard to get to.
The clutch is a bitch also and the shop time for a clutch R+R is 24 hours.
Its definately one of those love or hate cars but nimble and very quick is the best way I can describe one. If they were a little easier to work on I would probably still own one.

A STOCK 1989 951 has a top speed of 162 and a 0-60 of 5.5 seconds

List below is probably as good single reliable source list as possible. Numbers are from two Jörg Austen books. I know there are mistakes and inconsistencies in them. Still they all are factory numbers, not from magazines or private tests measured who knows how.
They tell simple story. When looking faster 5 speed versions of 928, almost all years they were both quickest and fastest front engine model available world wide. That really is what one would expect considering 928 was always also most expensive model if rare 968 Turbos are left out.
Only real contender is 250 hp 951 and it only manages to win 0-100 kph by 0.1 seconds on few years when 928 Club Sport wasn't anymore available. Fat and lazy 928 GT will beat stock 951 at 1 kilometer from standstill and at top speed. Academic one tenth difference on paper is in many cases irrelevant at traffic lights as its much harder to get clean start from 951 than from 928.
Looking just US models its little more even since early eighties 928 S models are left out. Still, stock vs stock there really isn't competition in many years.

I meant to mention one of the guys at essatech down here started to build a 750 hp 951 but backed out for some reason. Probably $. Very doable too but very expensive.
3L 16v engine, 924 turbo transaxle (good for about 800+ hp) a few custom drivetrain parts, ceramic clutch, the entire engine turbo setup has to be custom but at 750hp it should be, huge turbo, huge intercooler, huge injectors, race gas and go.
One benifit of 951s is there is a transaxle that can actually take some serious HP unlike the 928.
