value of a certain 951
hey there, I am new to the site, but not new to modding cars, german especially. I have been reading over 951 stuff and sifting through everything for the past few months. I have been a member of vwvortex.com for about 5 years, and have had many, many VW's. a few years ago, i drove by a house in my town and in the driveway sat a sad looking 951. upon further inspection, the tags expired in 1997....... the white paint was tarnished, but workable, as there was no body damage present. I left a not one the door, as no one was home, and never heard back from anyone. fast forward to now. two years later. When i looked at the car initially i noticed a receipt that had a name on it. thank god i have a photographic memory. anyway, i was running credit cards at work the other day, and a name comes up. i remembered where I had seen it, in the 951! I talked to the guy, who i have actually known from coming in and out of the store for the past few years, and he remembered getting the note and never caling me back. He had no idea that was my note.
Anyways, enough bull****. I am looking at the car again eith the guy this saturday, and I need to get a general ballpark figure of what the things worth. it is quite a........piece, to say the most. he told me it was the first porsche he bought new, and planned to restore it, but he has been having second thoughts. it is a 1987 951. i dont recall the mileage, but the headgasket is blown. he says that he starts it periodicaly and may move it a bit until it warms up, at which point he parks it again. hasnt been road driven since around 1997, interior is decent but leather is cracked, as well as the dash. has 16x8 and 16x9 fuchs, overal decent, with old crap tires. needless to say the whole car will need to be gone over, COMPLETELY.
so my question is, what is it worth? I know this may be hard without pics, but generally here is a summary:
1987 951
tarnished white paint
blown head gasket
sunbeaten cracked leather
16x8 and 9 fuchs
i dont know a whole lot more as of now, i.e. any dealer options, but any insight would be helpful.

But seriously, with all the work it needs, I would not pay over 2500 bucks. I've seen cars in better shape than you describe (running) on ebay go for less than that. Top notch cars seem to be bringing 8-10k, and I mean TOP notch. He probably thinks he can get 5K for it, but in my opinion it is worth about half of that. Unless he wants to part it out, then it could be worth more.

i am almost positive it was an 87, the dude bought it new he said, he also noted it was the 2nd year of the turbo, (first being 86)
I am hoping that it will be close to a grand, the guy is really down to earth and super nice. he has a 996 iirc. idk, as it sits the car has absolutely nothing good going for it
thanks for the replies!

Fuchs won't fit anything but an '86. The offsets changed in '87. If it has fuchs, it's an '86.
$1K might be worth a flyer, depending on what you want to do with it.

honestly i dont know what i would do with it if i did pick it up, i have other vehicles so it wouldnt be a primary at the moment. I am perfectly capable of doing all of the work myself. I figure if I can get it dirt cheap, I might as well. If it turns out to be a complete POS i could eitehr part it or resell it

Your call.
One thing is for certain. Whatever it will need done to it, several people here have the experience already. If you're handy, this site and Clark's Garage can get you through nearly anything.

i will be sure to check on the authenticity of the wheels, its probably an 86 then. if i makes any difference of year or option, it also has matching black dogleg rockguard type protective pieces behind the front wheel well and in front of the rear wheel well, kind of tying in the whole black/white theme here
