Default EGT probe install

Anyone have any pics or care to comment where they mounted their EGT probe? I was advised to drill the hole ~8-10inches beyond the turbo outlet in the downpipe, does this sound correct?

TIA

Best place to mount that is about 1-2 inches from the head outlet. You'll have to remove the metal heat sheild to mount it there. This will actually tell you whats going on in your cylinder. 8" Down the downpipe and you have no idea as there is plenty of time for the exhaust to cool between the head and the downpipe. Cylinder #4 is generally accepted as the hottest-running cylinder, though there has been debate on that subject.

I'm running one in the spot for the sniffer tube on the crossover. Works pretty good and is a nice check with the AFR, but it is combined temperatures, so no single cylinder tuning.

Ive got mine on cyl 4. Look for the "4" stamped in the heatshield, and thats where it is.

Mine is also mounted on the #4 tube about 2" from the head flange. I wanted to keep the factory shields so I used a 7/8 bi-metal holesaw to make the hole for the bung. I center punched in the desired spot, pilot drilled with 1/8" bit and carefully drilled with the holesaw until I could see the insulation between the header tube and shield (don't try to make the entire cut with the holesaw or you will cut into the header tube). I finished the cut with a Dremel HD cutting disk followed by a sanding drum to make it nice & round. Doing it this way still gave the Welder plenty of room to do his thing and it looks like a factory install.

Go aircraft style and get bungs welded on each exhaust header just after the exhaust port! Having 4 EGT gauges in your car would be totally cool!! LOL.

If you have 4 probes then put them as described shortly after the exhaust port.
But if you only have 1 probe then IMHO it's better to put it at the exhaust sniffer tube after all cylinders are merged. When all the exhaust pulses are combined the heat goes up so it's one of the hottest and best locations for an EGT probe.

Also, that way you have the combined data for all cylinders. Say the injector for cyl 3 goes... if you only have the probe in cyl 4... well you get the idea.

Default EGT location in headers

Here is what i have done about the EGT sensors.
Header is installed, car is running but EGT monitor is ongoing.
I have found as best location to install & replace the sensors.

Mounting a single EGT in the test tube fitting (if it fits and instead of the test tube) is probably the best solution. That probably also means, that the EGT numbers will not be slightly less than if it was mounted close to the exhaust ports.

Here is my set-up:
