In the door jam there is an oblong hole with small vents just below the catch for the door and there is a corresponding oblong hole with a rubber washer on the door itself just below the catch.
It has been raining and I have never noticed the water before as it is on the passenger side, and passengers don't ride in my car.
What are these holes for, where do they go, and why would one have water in it?
Thanks.

"There are vents along the hatch. I think they are to duct the warm air there to help defrost?"
So would it be possible the rain water could enter wherever they end (hatch) and spill back through to the door? Can you describe where this duct ends near the hatch? thanks.

When the hatch is open look along the sides on the car body itself. You will see a number of elongated holes. Maybe your hatch has a small leak(s). If the top of your hatch is coming loose water will get in there (my problem) and may be running down the sides
I don't have my car with me to verify though. But it seems logical to me. Maybe I read about the vents in the owners manual too.

I just saw those. it never occurred to me they are vents. this might be why my car smells like exhaust. when i tried to make the hatch leak with water i didn't see it on the interior....maybe it's making it's way through that duct and into the cabin. sounds a little far fetched, but i'm just guessing.
