Default Front End Vibration After Hitting Kerb

I've developed a vibration in my steering at speeds of 60mph and over (1986 951). This is after hitting a kerb on the right hand side (driver's side; I'm in Australia) at a fairly slow speed (I was braking trying to miss the kerb, which was part of a traffic island). The steering feels fine and smooth. It's not notchy. It has only developed the vibration.

I checked the tie rod and it seems that there is a fair bit of play at the steering rack side.

My questions is, how easy is it to damage the steering rack itself, or is it likely that the tie rod is damaged on the steering rack side?

Cheers

Mark

Ever think you might have slightly bent a wheel, or damagedf a tire?

Yes, totally flat spotted the front tyre. I've replaced the front tyres with new ones. The wheels were checked and balanced out okay, without problems.

i had the same problem to my little nissan truck except i didn't hit anything. I would get vibrations starting at 55 or 60 and the faster i went the worse it got. It ended up being a control arm.

Its possible you knocked the alignment out of whack. Did you have that checked yet?

Can you be a bit more descriptive of your problem with the power steering rack being loose?

I dont think its possible to damage the rack short of blowing seals out. I think. Having looked over the rack myself it seems fairly sturdy.

I hit a curb about a month ago, snap oversteer, bald tires...etc. Just stupid driving. I hit the curb almost dead on at roughly 10-15mph. I was lucky and did no damage at all, however i knocked the toe out of alignment by about 15 minutes (not degrees) on the drivers side (which hit the curb first).

It seems that there is play in the tie rod, on the rack side. There was absolutely none before hitting the kerb.

Anyway, I'll check her over on the weekend, when I get a bit of time. What I wanted to know was if these racks are easily damaged. Sounds like they are not. It's probably the tie rod that's been damaged. Tie rods are a lot cheaper than a reconditioned rack!

Cheers
