Wow lots of response on this one, along with others having the same issue.
Blueman33- I will definately try a new rubber shift boot under my leather one. I know mine has a few cracks in it anyways.
New taillights are on my list of things to replace so I will reseal those when I get the new ones. My original ones are getting dark looking from age.
I have had a lot of experience with cracked exhaust parts on previous 944's so I know mine are in good shape still, so I don't suspect thats my problem area.
My car also runs pretty rich, when I go to wash the back the hose rinses off a lot of black carbon. Once again I might suspect so much is coming out since there is no cat.

Instead of tape, would silicon work (the black silicon used for resealing windshields) for resealing the tail lights? should be.....right?

Hos: Sealing the tailights with silicone would make future removal a miseable affair. 3m butyl tape seems to me the best solution - factory and all that.
I always thought it was from the firewall seal not completely sealing against the hood - that and/or the DME boot not correctly installed. The fresh-air vent and blower is right behind that juction. My wife's main gripe about my car(s) is the exhaust/fuel smell. BTW, it happened in my 924S too when I owned it.
Perhaps you all have something here with the shift boot thing. The rear hatch seal and tail-lights would make better sense though.

Matt,
The simplest things are hard to get here, i will pass by ACE and see what they got, i recall seeing some body sealing tape few weeks back.
If not, the silicon is the way to go for me.

I am surprized that no one has mentioned the rear hatch seal leaking and needing replacement. I always understood that would be one of the most likely source of exhaust fumes being sucked into the cockpit.

Well, there can be numerous reason for exhaust smells; but the issue is how are they getting into the cabin.
Mine seems more prominent when the AC is on. And from another thread going on about the temp control/soliod vents that open and close when temp switch is rotated, I think the exhaust is getting in thorugh there. You can look into the vents and see the flaps open directly from the firewall.
Can this be sealed better?

Most of us that have posted said we already had new hatch seals, so we ruled that one out.

Yep. Pretty sure mine is from this area. And more so when the AC is on.

there is testing smoke that one could use to determine at least which end of the car it's coming in....at least worth a shot.
you could put it at the rear of the car and see if it entered the cockpit or not,...then repeat with the front. you might could determine where it is coming in and maybe even specifically if it's coming in a vent, a boot, etc.

never used it, so buyer beware, just a thought
