Touchscreen installed!
Well, I have been wanting to fit my car with a touchscreen for a while now, and finally got around to doing so. It is a Xenarc/Gain touchscreen (for those of you who are familiar). It hooks directly to the HD15 connector for a regular monitor... So you can run it from any computer/laptop. My laptop for my carputer is going under the glove box in a special bracket that I'm going to make... someday! It also has an autoswitch feature on one of the auxiliary inputs, so I can fit a backup camera...
Sorry, no pics of it on, the cables are stuck in storage for the time being.
As you can see, I had fun with the Dremel. The screen is a close fit, but not quite. Had to remove all the cross pieces in the stereo bezel and in the console itself. But kept the original mounting points for the bezel and console (just flipped them around). Viewing angle from the driver's seat should be pretty good. It is blocked by the shifter a little when in odd gears. But I may shave my shifter a bit to help that problem.
The hardest part of the whole project was getting the new shifter boot's mounting frame to snap back to the stereo bezel! Took about an hour to get it to stay!
Anyway, this is my first attempt at carputer installations. It really looks better in person. The pics don't do it justice (it really looks ghetto in the pics) but in person it looks pretty clean - I promise!
Big shoutout and thanks to Joe (josephsc) for the spare bezel!

funny thing is, i really wanted a double DIN tv, so it would be FLUSH and look GREAT. that way i wouldnt have to worry about screens popping out and what not. But my parents got me this as a present for my graduation and i couldnt be happier!!. BTW, the tv with the porsche logo on it is AMAZING. I love it!!

I could see a touch screen being handy on a car with a stand alone engine management system. All your tuning could be done through the dash without the effort of packing a laptop back and forth to the car - provided you had a computer installed in the car as well.

Frank: Nice Lilli... did you do the bezel yourself? I love RoadRunner with the Porsche logo... May have to get that from you!
I wanted something that looked stock, not sticking out over the A/C controls. Plus the screen and computer setup is by far cheaper than getting one from Alpine, Knwood, etc...
The whole concept of the carputer is to play mp3's, do navigation, play movies, tune the car, etc...
Check out www.mp3car.com - look at their forums.

thats what i wanted too, one that looked stock. But this was essentally given too me. Plus anyways, i have an entire car full of custom speaker pods and custom set up component sets with crossovers and computers in my trunk. The least of my worries is it blocking my a/c controls now
