My car with Lindsey's 3" exhaust and the Flowmaster 40 does not pass the EU noise requirements . I need something quieter than the 103db@4800rpm I have now. Which muffler will not be a large restriction, and still pass the inspection?

Stick another muffler (or two) into the exhaust system.

Borla XR-1 can be had in the cylindrical (5.25"x16") which can easily be "cut in" where the stock cat is located.

Also, you fit another oval 12" long XR1 where the exhaust runs up diagonal past the half shaft.

These are straight through mufflers that will not cost you any power, but will most certainly quiet down the car.

While I haven't done this to my 951, I did have a similar problem going up to 3" exhaust on my Jeep ZJ. Flow 40 just way too loud and, IMHO, way too ricey sounding. Swtiched to Magnaflow and all is good. Nice deep grumble at idle. Very civilized for daily driving. Let's you know it's there when you get on it. Hell, even my retired parents didn't think the Magnaflow was too loud.

Not sure how it'll be on a 4 cyl turbo, but it sure sounds good on a V8 Jeep.

While I haven't put a sound meter to my car, I don't think the Magnaflow would have a problem passing. I could tell the difference in sound on my car, but it wasn't that much louder.

The MagnaFlow for the 3 inch exhaust should get you down to around 83 db.

My 4 inch with the Magnaflow is around 93 db. The flowmaster on the same exhaust was around 126 db.

Measurements were taken reving the car up with the meter about 10 ft behind the car pointing at the exhaust outlet.

Thanks, Kev. I assume that's the one Lindsey sells?

Yep, and compared to the local chain stores the price is pretty good, even with shipping--to CA at least...

Dave L. says to go with the Borla to be on the safe side (XR-1 sportsman).
Any comments?

I used a 625 mm Simons muffler to replace the straight pipe (I have a muffler where the cat normally is located) and it silenced it down a lot and since it is a straight through muffler it should not reduce power.

Here is their catalog: http://www.simons.se/Katalog/PDF-kat...talog-2006.pdf

I used the "U 44 76 00 "TURBEX" Round 125 mm. Lenght=625 mm listed under universal 3".

Before I bought mine, I spent an afternoon in the archives. The loudest is the XR-1, then FM, then MF.
