Question Does the Porsche OEM CR-220 Radio fit my 87 951?

Greetings,

When I purchased my 87 951, it's equipped with an aftermarket JVC basic radio/cdplayer. Recently the JVC died, and I wanted to replace it with a Porsche OEM radio/cdplayer.

I searched the web, and found some OEM Porsche CD-220 for sale at reasonable price. My question is that will the CD-220 fit my 87 951 in spacing and wire connections?

Thanks for any insight

- Alex.

If you are interested, I just replaced my factory blaupunkt las vegas cd player from my 10 speaker option for an upgrade. It is in perfect operating order, and comes with 2 faceplates, direct wiring. Only thing it is missing a button on each faceplate. PM me if interested.

As long as the head unit is a standard single DIN (which it looks like it is) it should physically fit just fine.

Thanks, that's very good news to me!

May I ask if it needs any special modification (e.g. installation bracket, wiring harness) to fit the 951, or just a simple drop-in and connect the wires?

With best regards,
- Alex.

Don't buy it!
The problem is it has a fixed contrast for the display that is set for the horizontal position of the 911. In our cars the head unit is tilted about 30 degrees which makes the display un-readable.

the radio is tight fit but it will slide in without modification. It won't plug directly in to the wiring but I would try these guys. www.swstereo.com I haven't used them but the advertise wiring harnesses to retrofit newer radio into older Porsches. As far as the illumination, I don't have my illumination wire hooked up yet so I can't speak for the angle being a problem.

Are you doing this for looks or sound quality? You will get better sound quality with a aftermarket HU but if you like the OEM porsche look then go with that one. Plus down the road when you have a hankering to upgrade the system, you wont have to buy another HU.

Plus you better hope the PO of the HU has the code if you need it.

I had this unit in my previous 944, and liked it so well that I held onto it when I sold the car, knowing I'd have another 944 eventually. Now I'm trying to find a wiring harness so I can repair the hacked up job on the new 951, and use the becker unit again. Anyway, other than the issue of the display being a bit difficult to read during the day because of the angle issue, I think its a great upgrade if your trying to keep the oem look. It fits perfectly without any bracket, and www.swstereo.com has the correct adapter as mentioned before, thats where I bought mine. You'll also need an antenna adapter, but you can pick up one of those at Advanced Auto or the like, its not labeled as being for a porsche, but its the correct adapter.

I bought a factory serviced CDR-220 on eBay earlier this year with the intention of putting it in my car but I changed directions so it's still sitting in the box...has the code, removal tools and manual.

As to the fit, it will fine...any standard single DIN unit will be OK. As to the display, it is readable but the display is optimized for the newer 911s. If you're at all bothered by the display, you can get an display that is optimized for angled viewing from Becker for about $50.

The guy I bought it from has one on eBay now (CDR-220 Auction) for $339.
I'm going to sell mine and would be willing to take a resonable loss on the deal. PM me if you're interested.

Cheers,

Rick
