Default Axle / CV : Wish I could get a definitive answer.

I have heard so many different "facts"...I just don't know what to believe. Here is what I have gathered and has been told to me many times:

'85 and earlier axles are much shorter than 85.5 - 90 axles.

83 - 87.5 CV's are the same, went to a sturdier CV in late '87

the sturdier CV will not mate with a 87.5 and before axle, thus creating the "'87 and later axle"

HOWEVER, (and here's where the fuzziness comes in)

IF an 87 and later axle is already mated to a 87 and later CV, this complete axle will fit on any 85.5 or later 944/951

So as I understand it (disregarding 85.5 and earlier for a second), any mated CV and axle (85.5 - 87 CV with 85.5 - 87 axle, or 87.5+ CV with 87.5+ axle) will fit on any 85.5+ 944/951

IS THIS RIGHT???

thanks for helping to clear this up!

We swap axles between an 86 951 and an 89 951 without problems.

Just a quick PET check - looks like all the Turbo/S2 drive shaft assy's and CV joints are the same 86-89. The early 944 n/a (thru 85.5) has a different shaft assy than the post 85.5 shaft assy, but they use the same CV joint.
