Cheap Tire Recommendations

Yeah -- I saw that... but I also think folks assume the yokos are more expensive then they are... I had them on my 930 and have them on the 951 and really like them... so I plug them periodically (and like to point out that they are really reasonably priced).

I love when guys driving Porsche debate the best cheap tire, there has to be a joke in there somewhere.
The Kumho 711 was H rated and should never have been mounted on a Porsche, the 712 is an absolute piece of garbage and having done product testing I assure you the MX is NOT neck and neck with the S-03 (which is discontinued, BTW).
Of the tires listed the GRB from Falken is very decent, the Yoko ES100 is fine (but they have crappy breakway characterstics and they dont last very long).
Simply put there is a reason they are cheap. If you cant tell the difference between an S-03(RE050A PP)/Michelin PS2/GY F1GSD3 and an MX then you dont drive hard enough because the difference is freaking huge.

Well, maybe I don't. Screw me. The guy's asking for inexpensive tire options and I would put the MX at the top of the list for what he is looking for. Do I have scientifically backed data that I've personally researched? No, but I'm not sure to what extent your product research goes either. I've seen tire shootouts where the MX performed in the top of the list, particularly in dry traction, and faired well in wet. April 2005's Super Street even had the MX at #1 in the dry scid (g) test against 10 or so other tires, including some of the ones you listed, and it was at the top of the list (top 3 or 4) in other dry tests if memory serves.

Matt H hit the nail on the head about the Kumhos. Junk.
Just becasue a tire is cheap doesn't mean it doesn't work good. Case in point, the Falken. It may not be a Pilot Sport, but who cares? Where on the street can you really use either of those two tires at the limit?
And if that's the case, and it is, then why not use the money saved, and put it towards a real set of tires to run on the track like a Hoosier, where the differences become apparent?
Expensive tires to go to the grocery store, pick the kid up from school, sit in traffic, etc.. just doesn't make sense.

Danny, I think I know you from somewhere, maybe we met at some point, I used to live in Coppell.
The thing no one put into perspective with the Kumho is that they dont last worth a crap. Yes, they are cheap but if you had spent 1.5X moreyou really have broken even in terms of real dollars.
On dry pavement most people will not see the limit of a good tire and very few will see the limit with a great tire. On wet pavement that is not true. Wet braking tests have shown some products to stop as much as 60 FEET sooner from 60MPH than others. You dont see that published because the distances change by automobile. I.e. a manufacturer cant say "my product stops X feet better than X product" because that distance might not be true in all cases.

Thanks Matt for the input, I know you have a lot of experience with tires, but Im looking for a set of cheap tires just for daily driving and the occasional twisties =) If the Kumos dont last long I might just go with the Falken or the Fuzions unless you recommend anything else?

Fuzions! Everyone on here thats bought them per Matt's recomendation has yet to have anything bad to say about them. I'll pick up a set once mine Pirelli's are junk (which won't be to much longer).
