Do a search for intake or vacuum leaks. A wealth of information exists.

Default Car backfires constantly at idle

When i'm sitting at a stoplight my car makes a constant faint popping sound out the exhaust. Most pops are sort of quiet but then every few pops theres a louder one. I knew the car was running really rich when i got it 1 1/2 years ago. My dad took it to a shop and it was supposedly fixed but I dont know what they actually did to it and i've never really been convinced that its not running rich anymore. I drive slow and always shift at or below 3000, and my gas mileage isnt too great. I also smell burning oil or something if i ever rev over 3000. Any ideas?

Could you be sucking air through the manifold??? Otherwise I'd be thinking way rich.

Haha that's weird. Turns out it was blown intake manifold gasket. How much would this be to fix at a shop?

clarks-garage.com for detailed instructions

If you are always driving below or at 3K rpm your plugs must look pretty bad if you are running rich. Check your plugs and try taking it out and blowing it out a bit at WOT. These cars are not high revvers but 3K will kill a set of plugs in no time in around town driving. If the car is chipped and running rich you need to address this and possibly check your FPR, a failing FPR will make the car run very rich and fuel foul plugs. I had a similar thing happen and a fuel pressure test confirmed my problem quickly. If it runs OK at WOT but idles poorly and backfires at idle you have a problem, not a serious one but one that has to be corrected.

Keep posting your results here and your car will run fine!

I really would like to do it myself but I couldn't right now. I'm busy with school and track practice and work on the weekends, and I need it taken care of quickly by somebody who knows what theyre doing. Its in a shop right now, and i pick it up tomorrow. I really wish things would break when it is convenient to fix them, but it never seems to work out that way.

Since the intake is coming off, make sure the shop checks all those hoses for leaks. Better yet, replace them completely to illiminate possible leaks in the future.
