Default Clutch Disk: springs or no springs?

I know we often talk about clutches in here. And I could probably take the time to research previous posts to find out what the skinny is on this. But I figured we could all talk about it again.

Benifits with springs. Benifits without springs. What's the deal here? Let me know. When all is said and done, the car should have in the area of 300-350ish lb ft trq (depending on boost of course). So, gauge your opinions and thoughts on that.

2.5L, O-ring head-match ported, exturd honed intake, T04B BB, LR Dual Port WG, 550cc injectors, soon will have VR stage 2, thermal wrapped exhaust, LR stage 2 intercooler, MBC, 3" fabspeed with no cat, SFR 3" DP, and probably a bunch more expensive crap to get me killed that I am forgetting at the moment.

Most clutch disc without springs are race only, chatter a bit, etc. For the hp in your goal, you would be ok with a Cup PP and 930 disc. If you want to have a bit more clamping force, you can use a KEP plate with the same disc, etc. Call Jason at Paragon or LR, and discuss.

Track car - Cup PP with Porsche RSR copper disc - 351/347, jwl 2.8L - KEP PP with 930 disc no dyno yet but STRONG!

Hold off for a week or so and I can give you my low down on a 6 puck unsprung with a kep PP.

So, the disk with springs will make less noise?

So, after some research I have found that KEP pressure plates are the way to go. Combine with the Fidanza flywheel and 6 puck copper metalic disk. I am still mulling over whether to get one with springs or not. I am not sure about the little springs that pk951 is talking about. Do you mean the springs inside the larger ones? Should I then just look for disks with only one set of springs in them? Please let me know. Thanks.

I was talking to Keith at Eurowerks who had customer (may have been David Salama, but it's been awhile) who had an unsprung clutch and it made him a bit nervous pulling it up all the way into the garage but especially onto a trailer. There was no easing into it. I drove a friend's 320 whp Integra with no spring and I hated it. It just grabbed way to abruptly, but I suppose you could get used to it. He also had to push it into the garage. I have a spec 3, six puck sprung now and it's a little abrupt, but have no problems easing it that last 2 inches into the garage. I have a .wav file I can email you. You can hear how abrupt it is in normal shifting. The interior is gutted and solid engine and trans mounts so it's very audible.

Keith E,
I would appreciate it if you did send that to me. I would like all the info I can get on this matter before committing to the purchase. I kinda thought that the springs made for an easier ride. Just made sense that if you had springs it would engage more smoothly. Althought I don't do much traffic stop and go driving. I don't know if having an unsprung clutch disk would be worth it. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks.

Looks like the latest and greatest stuff is going into Jimbo's car in a few days with the KEP PP.
I would wait to hear from him how that is.
It has no springs, so it might make a little noise, but the bronze should engage more smootthly than mine.

GCB951: Ask Tony Garcia what did he use for his 400+whp previous car, you will be suprised.

I just want to do it right the first time. Ted Wright took me for a ride in his previous 951 that has the VR MAF and piggy back, turbo and a bunch of more goodies. He started burning up his clutch not much later. He told me to do the 6 puck copper metalic disk, KEP pressure plate, and the Fidanza flywheel. I might as well go big now while the motor is out of the car.

Figure out what the goals are for your car. If you don't plan on making over 340 whp. Than the stock clutch will be ok. My clutch slips at 350 whp at 4800 rpms. It's a stock clutch that was installed less than 1000 miles ago. If you plan on 400 whp 930 disc with a kep will do. Might be the best setup for a street driven 951. For the ultimate clamping and torque your best bet is a 6 puck with kep PP. I don't daily drive my car so I went with this setup. Might not be for everyone. There are some draw backs. 1 inch engagement for instance. For me the benefits out weigh the disadvantages.
