Default Are the 89 2.7L and S2 Transmissiions the same?

Are the 89 2.7L NS S2 Transmissiions the same? I am looking for a lower ratio (higher numerical) final drive transmission for a 951 and have been advised on the Rennlist that the S2 is the way to go. I found an 89 2.7L tranny at a reasonable price and was wondering if its the same, or as strong as the S2 Transmission?

The best way is to check the transmission code on top of the housing, but I have 016J tranny as the one for the '89 2.7l 944 -- so the answer is: no, keep looking for an S2 tranny.

Thaks for the input. I found a couple of S2 Transmissions advertised online, but without prices. Do you know what's a fair price for one?

Was the 2.7 engine only used in 89?

Yes, 2.7L only in '89.

From my suspect memory the '89NA tranny has the same ring and pinion ratio but the 5th gear ratio is a little lower. No more big jump to fifth.

Lou, I'm actually more concerned about the strength of the tranny. I was told that the S2 tranny was as strong (and internally like) the Turbo tranny. I am just lloking for a strong tranny with a lower ratio (higher number) final drive.

No - get the S2. don't settle. The S2 is a tough customer, believe me.
