They had a nice ad and picture of this in Car Craft and Hot Rod magazine this month. I think they're already in production for the american muscle car motors.

Nope, it works like the old MLS HP gaskets – the O-Ring will be trapped between two very thin layers of spring steel that are embossed with ridges for sealed areas. One of the catches is that the gasket thickness is limited to .051”.

Awesome news! Looking forward to seeing more of this. Currently, I have an O-ringed head with a Widefire HG, any reason I could or should not take the metal O-rings out and run this new MLS gasket if and when the time comes? Thanks for sharing Chris!

We use helicoflex for particularly nasty applications in the nuclear industry so I'm thinking it's probably still pretty much at the top of gasketing technology. I put one on recently that was $20,000 for one gasket. Of course it was about 14 feet in diameter.

I should have one in hand inside of a week. We will see what happens from there…

Please do keep us posted and thanks for the information. I actually was going to call Cometic middle of next week to place an order so this coincides perfectly with my timing - I'd like to do a preventive h/g replacement on the 951 as part of some upcoming upgrade work. . . Thanks - this sounds like it might be a VERY welcome solution to an age-old problem.

Wonder if we can get a group buy on 'em like the valve stem caps.

Yah I got plans for the 951. I'm going to be ripping so much other crap apart I might as well do the h/g as a preventive measure and get it over with. Won't take that much more time since everything else will be apart. Might even upgrade the head itself if I can convince myself to spend the money. I swear with the money I'm putting into this thing I could take that plus what I'd make for the car and sell it and buy a pretty nice 80s/90s 911. So I'm debating right now. . .

But yea I really would sleep better with one of those cometics on there.

Same here, with the exception of selling it and getting a 911, lots and lots of work to do, and i have half the engine appart (front end, Intake, oil cooler, headers, might as well just replace that headgasket since that is the only thing left that could go bad since it is the factory one).

Anyways....back on topic

I read the article in HotRod (all two pages, mostly pictures). Looks like it is good for designs were there may be clamping or movement issues - all things these Open Deck engines have.

i've actually used this, and so has chris white. it fails (blows out) more easily than the stock gasket, even at stock boost levels.

in addition, cometic's support is pretty crappy (they don't stand behind their product). based on first-hand experience, i would not recommend this gasket.

you can see the blowout at the 5 o'clock position in both the number2 and number3 cylinders, and also at 6 o'clock at the number1 cylinder;

Wow, so that blew out at several cylinders.

I guess that certainly proves more of a headgasket problem and not tuning.

Were all of the specific head smoothing/tq. specs addressed?? I assume they were but it seems from thier site that this hg requires VERY specifc instal/mounting guidelines.
