951 straight pipe thoughts
Well, I had a straight pipe welded in from the cat back today. I did a search before I did it looking for a little info and didnt find much so im posting this up for future searchers.
I love the sound! I have the stock cat, and a 2.5 inch straight pipe from the cat back, no muffler. Its really not overly loud at all, and has a very throaty sound. The turbo really does muffle the sound alot. Once on boost, it seems to actually quiet down quite a bit. It only cost me 120 dollars to do, and my muffler was shot anyway, so Id say for anyone looking to do a cheap exhuast upgrade, it may be worth it to give this a shot.
I will take some sound clips once i get my laptop (next week or two) and post them back up in this thread. I wonder what it would sound like with no cat also? Either way, it sounds great now. Got to love going under your first overpass. or through a tunnel at full throttle with a new exhaust!

Well I was kind of thinking just a straight pipe out the side not really the side pipes. Simply to cut down on the amount of expansion the exhaust would be subjected to. Didn't Wojxxxxx can't remember the guys last name, the Canadian guy with the car for sale have a side exhaust, no muffler. This would be for track use anyway.
Course my car sets so low I'd rip it off at the first off track excursion, maybe not such a good idea.

POP, you're not alone. i thought of this back when i had the '84. I pussed out, but now if I do it, there's not even 3" between my car and the ground, and WTF am i going to do with that little area in the diffuser in the rear where the exhaust is supposed to come out?
i think i just need straight pipes and to run a little richer. and possibly make the exhaust a bit longer so it doesnt burn up the bumper pads.

I have a 3" cat back straight pipe. It sounded good at first. I used it for about 6 months until I couldn't stand the loudness. Put the stock (ansa) muffler section back on and love the stealth factor. Seems faster, maybe only because I can floor it without announcing it to the world. Good luck with yours.

I agree there's nothing wrong with a side pipe but I can't get a standard floor jack under the car the way it sits. I bought a 3" one and it just fits so if we made 2"x4" box exhaust, to get the same opening, I don't think I could get it up and down off the trailer with that ground clearance. Would definitely look cool though.

Chas - you need to be careful. Depending on what is controlling your fuel, you may be lean. Have you monitored fuel under the cutout?
This will increase the airflow a lot.

Thanks for the warning....but I have a WideBand 02 setup with piggyback fuel management, 55# injectors, 3bar fpr, etc, etc, etc
It is a good warning for those out there with a stock car that want to chop off their muffler, cat, or dump exhaust to atmosphere. From looking at the datalogs, it does use quite a bit more air...and at the same boost too, meaning the turbo is running more efficiently...
