has been asked before but I forgot. What is the performance increase associated with open dump WG config. ?It only vents when open, so is there some effect on exhaust back pressure that is being eliminated?

I've run dump to atmosphere for over 200 miles now. No difference until the wastegate opens, then WOW

I'm running a LR Super 75 and DPW, 3" stainless system with no silencing and dual 3" tailpipes.

Best thing is with the Blitz EBC, dialling the boost down to something like 8PSI and flooring it - the wastegate opens almost immediately !

Sorry, got to go lay down in a dark room now and take my tablets

I have been running an open wastegate for years(930 and 951), wouldn't have it any other way.
When I get it put back together in the next month or so you are welcome to a ride.

Thanks for the offer HP Farm, but since this sounds pretty good, I may have mine installed before then! Welcome to IN by the way. Maybe I will see you at the next GTG.

Default Sound level db?

Do any of you guys run this way at tracks with sound restrictions? Our local track, like many has sound restricted to 95Db. I wonder if this would put one over?

Did this on a 16v 3.0 turbo of my friends.....stock WG, except for stiffer spring.... OMG it sounded MEAN.

I've been running open WG for 4 years now.
1 year with stock WG and 3 with 38mm tial without a bracket.
It not so bad since its only at WOT over set boost pressure.
I can hold 15psi w/o opening it since boost is set a 20psi on my car.

But this summer i added a resonator to reduce the sound a bit.
Works great with a resonator, much more urban friendly.

The performance gain is reduce exhaust backpressure, reduce turbulence in the exhaust.
Plus i'm sure it also reduces the backpressure in the crossover pipe since their is no restriction on the wastegate dump pipe.

I have many video's but the place i host them is down.
Need to find another host.

You haven't noticed any problems without using a bracket for the WG? Any vibration issues?

I think so, IIRC Rick's exhaust was over 100db anyway (at 4,500rpm) so if he says its loud now then it must be LOUD!
You could always put a small silencer on it, a small restriction there shouldn't be an issue and you are freeing up the flow in the main exhaust pipe.

I posted a while back how you can use the stock torque tube bracket on the large exhaust flange by the wastegate to add support its not pretty but it should help.

You have to spin the torque tube bracket round and bend one end to clear the wastegate (vice and lge hammer) otherwise it bolts up.

(plse note one line points at the wastegate adaptor plate next to the flange not the flange itself)

".....if he says its loud now then it must be LOUD!"

It is :-)

Rick let me have a drive of WUF at a PCGB meet a few months back. A crowd gathered outside the club house just to enjoy the sound of me playing......I was half a mile away at the time.

You have to remember that the exhaust gases coming through the wastegate is not muffled by the turbo. The turbo hacks up the exhaust pulses a lot, like a "rotating muffler".

But when the WG dumps the gases is coming straight from the headers.
That is also why the sound changes so much.

It is ridiculously loud. If you like it or hate it it's up to you

Here's a video taken w/ the windows up. I have the LR mild steel system, Magnaflow muffler, w/ their wastegate dump tube pointed downward.
Dumped wastegate
If I had to drive the car on the street a lot I would get tired of it. It's a track-only car so not an issue.

Diago, as far as sound limits at tracks, it should pass fine. You could always rotate the dump tube away from the testing station to help.

i couldn't hear you get on boost? I am thinking about venting my wastegate to the atmostphere but i am unsure if it will be to loud or not. My car is street drive but on rare occasions like the weekends or just once in a while.
