Vertex did it for me, they are a sponsor on the site so give them a call for details. I did the R&R of the trany, banded it to a pallet and sent it to them. They arranged pickup at my work (after 911...requires truck shipments from a business) with their trucking company. In a couple of days they had replaced the open diff with a new porsche LSD, replaced bearing and seals and shipped it back. That was about a year ago and no problems or leaks. Over 12 track days and several +1000 miles trip this year.

I have not priced a factory ZF LSD from a dealer, but I will have to check on that. My guess is that the LSD assembly is well over $1000 by itself.
Parts for a rebuild, all the bearings and seals required to do a complete rebuild, are $4-500. Probably closer to $400 if the synchros were not replaced (?).
Labor to do the disassembly and shim the differental and pinion shafts (setting the ring/pinion spacing) is a several hour job. Probably looking at a minimum of $400.
I did not know Vertex would be capable of doing something like that for $1k. The catalog I have only shows replacement/rebuilt transmissions between $1400 and $1650 plus $600 core charges. Do you know if they sell LSD units separately?
Typically aftermarket LSDs and Torque Biasing Diffs (Torsen type units) run from between $1200-$1800 for just the differential.

The job they did was to replace the open diff with a factory LSD. They didn't rebuild the trany, they didn't go into the gearbox. The procedure was to pull out the diff, determine the correct shim for the new drive bearing, and replace the seals in that part of the trany. It wasn't a complete trany rebuild, it was shifting perfectly so it didn't need one. I just needed the LSD installed.
I have to agree on the price of an aftermarket assembly. I paid $1100 for a Quaife unit for the 86 and then had to install and shim it myself. I also had to purchase a new pump gear (86 has the cooling coil) for over $200 dollars because the LSD unit has a different gear then the open diff. Now add in the seal kit and the new bearings. Next you have to order the correct shims from the dealer after you go through the pre-assembly tests.
I called several shops that did rebuilds and I was surprised that I could get a LSD installed for LESS the purchase price of an aftermarket unit. I already did this last winter on the 87 and have receipts to prove it. I am just sharing what I have already done because I though it was a good deal.

Brian,
Its better than a good deal, its an extraordinary deal. Please post or PM me any info you have on other shops/vendors that carry or will install a factory new LSD for around $1k. I would be in complete bliss to just buy a factory new LSD for $1k.
Any part number or catalog numbers from Vertex would also be appreciated, since I also checked their website and found no LSD or transmission work available, other than seal kits and the rebuild I mentioned above.
