Default Mahle 100.5 and 101mm Pistons

Look what Mahle sent me...one vendor is looking into this, I won't tell you his name or business but he is VERY respected here. They will be 8.1:1 CR and have Ferroprint iron coating. The estimated target price is less than $1300 with rings. That's all I know at this point. I have sent them a 100.5 to double check cc volume.

The reason I've kept on with this is that there are many blocks out there that can be saved, it is certianly cheaper than doing a 2.8L ( rods $1100, pistons $1450, 3.0 crank 1000-1500, plus added turbo/fuel system) and with the cost of machine work (avg $650 for bore/hone/finish alusil bore) you can refresh your old tired block for about $2200 including shipping the block. I'll tell you this, we probably need at least 17-18 very interested/committed people to make this happen. If you're not sure what size you would want, depending on damage, just vote that you would buy a set. TIA!

Do these have enough dish to be non-interference?

Just to throw out an idea, what about seeing if you can get them pre-flycut? Like what Laust did? It might drop the CR a bit, but it would definatly be a nice feature if it didnt significantly change the price.

The dish will be as originally done by KS. I thought about the cut but didn't want to get the price up to high or add to it. I think LR does this if you ask when they thermal coat the tops, not sure, but if we get into it and enough people are interested, we'll ask.

About a month or less after they get the order according to Mahle. They would be cut then coated. The rings and groves would be about .08mm less than the originals. The rest is basically how many people want a set or need a set. The minimum order is more than the 17-18 but in the discussion the other day, he hinted about that number to get it going, as it's a pretty good chunk of $$.

I've got an engine that's waiting for a rebuild, but it's going to be waiting for a while. If these are still availibe when I actually get around to doing it I'm certainly interested. I didn't want to check a box, though, because I'm not committed to it any time soon.

The thing with the 3.0L crank is you really need Carillo or Pauter rods to miss the oil pan and the sides of the block, which adds $1100 or more and the crank. Here is a picture of Jim's 2.8 build with Carillo rods and 101 Tom C pistons. Take a look at the rod clearence

Although some people do grind to make it work....

I take it these are replica 951 pistons in 1-over and 2-over sizes. You'd need to have the wrist pin moved up to work with the longer stroke unless you want to get creative with short rods. Otherwise, the pistons will rise 9.1mm too high -- redefining the notion of an "interference" engine.

Tom, yes these are just for 2.5 engines at the moment, stock length rods, no 2.8 stuff on the horizon at the moment.
