I did the same thing on my 89 turbo back in 1998. I remember the horrid sound when I 1st cranked it. By mistake turned the crank the wrong way and the tensioner only works in one direction and if you go counter clock wise, you start jumping teeth.
That was not the biggest mistake. Biggest mistake was sending it to Huntley to fix it. The head had bigger valves from APE and ofcourse what do you know, Derrek lost the head. Funny how good things tend to disappear.
Still get pissed off when I think about it.

I've done something similar before. Forgot to tighten the nut on the cam belt tensioner. It was only snug. When it first fired up, it skipped 4 teeth. This was on a N/A as well!
I re-timed it, tightened down the tensioner nut, and it just fired right up. I feel like I dodged a big bullet on that one.
The moral of the story is, when a timing belt skips, re-time and try to fire it up before any disassembly, sometimes people do get lucky.

I like that knucklehead cam name though. If somebody hadn't read this story, they would think that's a cool name

HAHA - started her up before - sounding meaner than ever

Gotta be looking for 575 RW with this lift/duration.

Christ I f*cking hate those autotensioners. Pure work of Satan. Give me the old setup with the pulley (or the 968's hydraulic tensioner) any day.

I swear if I ever get another '87+ engine I'm retrofitting a pulley on it and losing that infernal thing.

No, these tensioners is a bad thing to forget!

BTW, did you change the lift tool? To what, or is this your deepest secret?

Why not just go 2.8 and blow the 700 mark?

At least I was able to crush old used valves when I spoofed my install. Anyone get you a "Go big or go home" shirt yet?

Yeah - my cam lobes lobes are reversed - there is a small area where the lobe DECREASES in size.
Other than that, they just look like 2 inch diameter circles from the side.

I'll have pictures of the "knucklehead" after I test it.

OK, I am going to ask a really stupid questionn What do you mean when you say you forgot to release the auto tensioner spring?

I left it locked down all the way to the right - I never touched it after I removed the old one 4 weeks ago.
