Just incase anyone is interested in other options, here is what I am going with. Not to stomp on the price of $1400 for a set of pistons, but I can have rods and pistons for that cost.

http://www.importperformanceparts.ne...o_porsche.html

Price is for (4) 8.5:1 C/R 104.5mm pistons, (4) Pauter rods. Build is 4 to 6 weeks from time of order.

Are those coated pistons or do you have to sleeve or nikasil plate the bores?

What are you going to coat them with, as already asked or what material are they made of?

Here is a potential source. I have no experience with these folks, and am not sure if they have them, but they do advertise them.

You can have any pistons coated. You can also have the sleeves coated as well. If your going to turbo your 3.0L, why are you going to skip out on the most important parts. If the Ross pistons aren't good enough, you can always order custom Venolia pistons with whatever silica content you would like to keep them as close to factory as possible at only $98/piston. I just can't see how a piston can be worth $350.

That's a good deal with a sleeved application, but the 968 turbo pistons were designed for non-sleeved alusil applications. After you buy sleeves at about 700-800 bucks, you are'nt saving much if any.

Yes but the question is which coating, how much, and can it replace the iron/tin factory coating that has become difficult to obtain?

The iron/tin coating does not seem to be an aftermarket option and I do not know if anyone is sure that the other coatings will do the job. At least one person had a piston gall with an aftermarket coating.

My local machine shop tells me it has been running standard JE and Weisco pistons in unsleeved alusil 944 bores (with wide wall gap) for years -- for track use. (They also botched my block, so consider the source.) I have not found any aftermarket pistons with an iron coating, other than Mahles, so I imagine time will tell which of the aftermarket pistons will last.

I've wondered about this myself, as it kinda looks like the iron/tin gets worn off on higher mileage engines. Perhaps some of the piston coating transfers to the cylinder walls and the rest is up to the zinc, phosphorus or whatever's in the oil.

As long as you don't get galling and plan to blow the motor all to hell long before you get significant piston skirt wear, it might be OK to run uncoated aluminum pistons.

Call Performance Developments 949 646 7461. They have just developed Pistons for the stock bores. They are not standard sizes though. Not sure about the CR either. Need to ask them. These are special Pistons not made in the US.

Not sure if your talking about the guy in Canada who had a piston go bad but it wasn't the coatings fault, if we're talking about the same guy. If you are, I have 2.5 years on an engine, nothing but track use and still has compression of 148 + and less than 3% leakdown.

Heritage was the vendor Discussing with Mahle IF they were going to buy a round of oversize pistons, not sure what became of it, as I thought Heritage Werks or something so I never contacted them.

Jason @ Heritage Motorcar builds 968 turbos and I know he has pistons made for his projects. Maybe try him?
