We have 10 inches of snow on the ground as of today. The car is put away for the year back in it's glass box. Unless we get a summer day here, fat chance, it's done until Spring

I just wish I was in Florida right now instead testing at Sebring dammit!

WOW. My intent was not to ignite a war between whos is faster!

Bottom line - I LOVE my 2003 996. In fact its probably the best all around car I've ever driven much less owned. However, I wanted to express on this board that the 951S simply does not get the credit it deserves and I now see that more clearly after having both in my garage. From a pure raw driving perspective the 951S is a great car but it has many shortcomings that the 996 does very well. The biggest factor is that one car is 2years old and the other 17yrs old, that speaks volumes!

Which is actually faster on a track or on the stopwatch? Probably the 996. Which "feels" faster? The 951S to me. This is probably due to all the refinements Porsche has done in those 15 years that seperate the 2 cars.

BOTH are great cars and I am fortunate to have had both parked in my garage!!

No arguments here, but my 951 does rest outdoors while the 996 sits in the garage with it's battery charger.

you need a bigger garage. I also have a 951 and 911, but they both stay indoors with covers.

Humm. No worries, no war here. You're lucky to have owned both. And you're right, the 951 didn't and still doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

But I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you about which is faster on the track. I believe a "lightly" modded would have faster laps times than the 996. However, this is all predicated on the fact of having a "skilled driver" behind the wheel. I'll make you a deal, why don't we go up to either The Glen or Limerock with both cars and see which produces faster times. Of course, I'd be happy to test them both for you.

stock to stock, no question the 996 is an all around beter car but if you are talking about modifed. thats a different story. The price u pay for a 996 you can drive a 500rwhp 944 turbo and still have a load of change. All depends what you are doing with the car. If you pull up to the country club the 996 is probably a better car. The dollar sign rules there. I'll keep the 944 turbo.

In terms of $ per fun ratio -- the 951S, hands down!

And heck, around here (Los Angeles), my Silver Rose feels like an exotic 'cause everyone and their mom drives around in a 996 or a Boxster....

Given the same 0-100 time the car that feels much faster is the one with a torque curve that starts low and ends high, ie....turbo.

I've owned a lightly modded 944 Turbo S and a lightly modded 928 GT at the same. Both cars 0-100 times were the same. The 944 Turbo S felt much faster. Where the 928's torque curve was almost completely flat, 275@2000 to 300@5400 to 290@6500, the 944TS torque curve started much lower and basically climbed all the way to red line with the biggest jump right about where the 928 started sagging. The torque / rate of acceleration increased all the way to redline on the 944 so it felt faster. The 928 actually felt like it accelerated slower the higher the rpms climbed. The advantage of the 928 was that cruizing at 70 on the highway you could just floor it in 5th gear to accelerate to pass traffic without downshifting.

A really interesting bit is that my 2001 Boxster S had the same stock hp, weight, and Porsche quoted 0-60 as the 944 TS, but felt way slower and was much slower 0-100. It's not all about weight to hp ratio.

While I really like the 911, they are like weeds here in LA.

Dont ask me if a 944 sligtly modded is faster than a stock 996...I have been picking on my uncle and some of his friends for years.

the 996 is a much much better all around car. but, in performance terms a light bolt on 951 is a faster car. and I have driven several of both as well as raced.

that being said its all relative you could mod the 996tt's to destory even the most modded and capable 944 turbos

the weight of the 944 is over what it actaully is, about 2900 or so lbs. The 951 also has a much better balance in the chasis so I would agree the 944 will probably perform better on the track with equal drivers.

Just because a car costs more doesn't make it a better car. That said, I'd still rather have a new 911 over my old 951.
