The head it had some damage in the ceramic in one of the cylinders that's what Sam said. Make me a offer whatever you think is reasonable. I also have a turbo tranny with cooler 146k miles for $ 450.00 for pick up only. Also a good block for $ 400.00 and a great set of pistons for $ 175.00 all for pick up.
here is the head

Buckaroo, I was taken advantage of by Bill at AutoTech earlier this year when I was green and pretty naive on parts sources for my 89 951. Bill is a pretty fast and smooth talker. After calling him about an A/C control panel (that I fortunately did not need or buy), he sold me a "heater clip repair kit" for $25! Just the two plastic bits that clip onto the cable and the metal keepers... ouch. Also sold me a mediocre shift linkage (with a pretty worn bushing -- still had to buy that part) for $30... double ouch. On top of that he charged me roughly double the shipping than necessary... Have never once considered buying from him again. Sorry you got hit for an entire engine.

Huh, I've bought a couple of things from AutoTechPlus without any problems. Even in a round-about way had a transmission rebuilt from them. 2 years, several autocrosses and track days later, no problems on it.

While I don’t disagree that you got a “used up” motor there are a couple of things I noticed –
1) The picture of the compressor side of the turbo looks pretty normal to me – the missing ceramic would have impacted the hot side wheel not the compressor side.
2) The degradation shown in the head gasket is not unusual and it will not effect operation. The part of the gasket that is in bad shape does not seal anything – it just ‘hangs out’ in the coolant.
3) Cam wear pattern – again, this is very normal for any mileage 944.
4) The cylinder wall discoloring is not a serious problem – typically it will clean up easily. Not what I would want for a premium priced engine but not a serious problem unless the walls have been deeply etched.
On the bad side – the missing ceramic is not good and (most importantly) if you bought the engine with out the exhaust manifolds this was in plain sight and the seller was begin pretty dishonest.
I have pulled apart my share of 951 engines and this one does not look that bad compared to most over 100k engines. I would have expected better of a 50k mile engine!
BTW – 50k miles seems to be a magic number to people that part out cars….there are more ‘claimed’ 50k mile used parts out there than possible!
