Cracked cylinder walls are the result of detonation. How you got to the detonation is the result of tuning....or lack thereof!!

To accurately read the plugs you need to run specific tests including shutting down the motor at speed just after a ‘power’ run. Modern (yes, that includes the 944!) management systems will make reading the plugs difficult – not like the good old carb days!

If you ran N/A pistons, did you do anything to lower the compression?

Interesting to see someone start a thread on a enthusiast forum claiming to be the king of carnage and motivating it by having blown up two engines in no time, tuned it by looking at the plugs and being kinda drunk when driving.

Tell me, do you measure boost by measuring how long the one leggers are?

My understanding is that you retard the timing to prevent pistion detonation. Depending on your Air to Fuel mix you retard the timing thereby the plugs fires prior to top dead center. If you don't then heat caused from normal spark at top dead center will burn a hole in the pistion.

In seriously high compression motors (1:19+) or motors with a cam that's duration overlaps it is necessary to retard the timing and run high octane fuel to prevent piston detonation.
Alcohol motors are the worst for detonation as any fuel pressure loss will cause detonation. Gas motors can to that too but normally not as quick.

Am I wrong?

What compression N/A pistons are those?

9fifty1: From the dish area in the pics, it looks like MY83-86 NA pistons - 9.5:1 according to the Kevin Gross FAQ.

Badcoupe: I didnt mean to anger you by that post if I did: it's just the image that came into my head when I read this. I suppose if I had the knowledge to read plugs and gain insight into combustion events in a cylinder, I'd use it too. It seems to me that a wideband solution provides a much quicker feedback loop for a modest investment.

9.5:1 for US spec, if you have the Euro pistons(which you are not looking at the picture) you'd be getting 10.6:1
