I have stated this in the past about this subject:

My mech, Porsche only shop, 20+ years exp and most of that with racing cars. He Swears by Amsoil. He said he has borken down tons of motors after races/race seasons and after running with Amsoil, he says the motors looks brand new still. But he says Mobil 1 is a very close second.

So then it is a cost issue. But if I could run a track motor all season and tear it down at the end and all internals still look basiclaly brand new, you make the call

But, in terms of 100% street car, then cost vs. reward would say Mobile 1 would be your choice.

But then again, cost starts to equal out when you are able to run Amsoil like 12K miles

Well the reality is that when it get real cold I don't drive the car. Normally, when it is that cold there is snow and ice on the ground. Those to factors considered + "I like my Car"= Storage shead with a cover and to 5200 series locks securing it!

Thanks

Okay, thanks for the rolling eyes smiley buddy.
The thing is, 20W50 is too thick for anything short of hard driving in a southern state on a hot day.
Considering you came in here asking what oil to use, I find your comment pretty offensive.
So, run 20W50, go for it.

Well had no intention to offend you personally nor was I coming after you personally.

Considering I did not give all details about my 951, where I am at, and under what conditions I drive the car. I left open a whole lot of room for varibles that my or may not effect me.

I do appericate the your time to tell me your thoughts. The fact is I am new to the 951 and really do have intentions of treating the car to nothing but the best! I have a great deal to learn about the vehical and drive it respectfully.

I appericate your advise. In April of next year I will be in Bamburg Germany. I ran 15W-50 Mobil 1 in my 83 944 Good stuff! That is why I initally fiqured 5W-40 European oil. That is my lack of knowledge of what to expect product wise when I move!
Thanks

With any luck in april of next year I will be in Germany as well, but on vacation.... I have everything picked out, just waiting on some funding

5W40 will be pretty much perfect for the application.
You want a lower first number (cranking resistance), especially when the weather is getting a little bit cooler, yet you want to keep the viscosity up as much as you reasonably can. Of course, something like a 0W60 is just stupid. People will reccomend that you use the heaviest oil you can get your hands on again and again, and I have no idea why.
The fact of the matter is, the higher the cranking resistance, the harder the engine will be to start, the worse the oil will flow at startup, and the worse mileage you will get.
Also, the higher the viscosity, the more energy is lost to heat due to the resistance of moving parts passing through oil, and forcing such a thick oil around. This will cause your oil temps to go up purely as a result of running too thick of an oil. Consequently your oil pressure will drop to what most people consider acceptable, and people think everything is fine.
If you have an oil temp gauge, you can see exactly what I am talking about. I find my oil temps run about 20*C cooler with a 5W40 than with a 15W50 or 20W50 when I'm at the track. That's a pretty profound difference. It also starts a lot nicer, and I get a lot less lifter clatter on startup.

On a neat side-note. Amsoil is currently working to reformulate their AFL (5W40 european formula) to meet VW 505.01 specs, meaning I can run the same oil in my 05 Golf TDI and my 87 951. This will save big bucks

Man I hope they get it approved, I'm tired of using Motul in my Passat TDI...

HAHA! yeah! Another TDI owner
Yeah, I'm running Liqui-moly in my TDI, but it's around $68 for 5L and an oil filter, which isn't worth it, but I was stuck with it since I was initially quoted $41. If Amsoil hasn't had it recertified by January (their expected release date) I'll be ordering some Elf 506.01 from TDIParts.com. Hopefully Amsoil will release a 505.01, 506.01 and 507.00 product-lineup, but I'm not counting on it.
Other than Amsoil, ELF seems to be a very close second as far as oil quality goes, which makes it a tough call between using ELF 506.01 and Amsoil.

Wink 20W-50

The 20W-50 Racing oil is not recommended for 25000 miles. Six months or 6000 miles. Check the bottle.

How about Shell Rotella 0W 50 fully synthetic, I noticed this oil today and was wandering if it was worth a shot. It gets cold here in Toronto over the winter....

I'm using the Motul 505.01 from ltbmotorsport. It's 7.75 a liter but I'm running the full 10,000 miles between changes and doing oil analysis. So far it's been far from worn out.

I'm still too early for the full 10k mile change intervals. I am going to start doing UOA and VOA though, as I'll be installing a bypass filter soon, and probably chipping it, etc.
It's nice, you can order from all of the places where the oil is cheap. Up here in canada, we don't have that luxury. Everybody wants to send UPS/FedEx, and unless they send 3rd day air (mega-bux) I have to pay brokerage on it, which just kills...
I figure for the first oil change or two, I'm going to use liqui-moly, then switching to Amsoil if they get approved, or else Elf 506.01, but if I switch to the 506.01 I'm going to order enough for 2 or 3 oil changes, since I hate paying UPS $50 to sign a stupid piece of paper.
Uh oh, I think I'm side-tracking this thread.....
