Fair $$$ for fire repair
Hey guys...
I 'm having my 944 turbo repaired in Boise Idaho by a reputable shop to prepare it for the drive back to Atlanta. (I initially planned on trasporting the car back but I could not find anything cheaper than $1800-2000 range which came along with a nice 90 day wait for the carrier to plan a route... So I decided to have it fixed and drive it back.) Well I shipped most of the parts needed to the shop from my own stock pile of parts from owning 3 951s. Spoke to the owner of the shop and he said it didn't look to bad. Needless to say they ended up taking off the intake manifold and replacing alot of parts that were crispy. I would like to ask what my fellow rennlisters think is a fair SHOP price for the work performed on the car.
Here is what they replaced / reworked / installed
new fuel lines (I provided) - Lindsey
used dampener / FPR / fuel rail / injectors with new seals (I provided)
used wiring harness (I provided)
new magnacor wires (I provided) - Lindsey
new fuel injector wiring harness (I provided) - Lindsey
new vacuum lines (I provided) - Lindsey
new misc rubber boost hoses under manifold
new breather tank/oil filler tube
new cycling valve
new check valve
new intake manifold gaskets
new speed sensor
new reference sensor
new heater valve
new heater valve hoses
Fresh coolant / oil / filter
What would be a fair bill for this amount of work?
The bill I got from them this past Friday sounds unfair.
I thought this would be a good place to ask for advice / input...

I have to say 10 hours, even though some people on here could do it in way less. Finding where to route all the vacuum lines isnt easy. Replacing the oil filler tube on a turbo is time consuming. That metal shield around the brake stuff needs to come out right? The wiring harness can take a while the first time around. Etc etc. I would be satisfied with something around 10 hours.

I'm being billed for 23 hours... plus RETAIL dealer prices on parts...
The owner said since he had alot of time in it "making things work" and making sure that there aren't anymore fuel leaks... He didn't install the Lindsey fuel injector harness or the Lindsey fuel lines but charged me for his lines.
I told the owner that I would call him Monday to talk about it.

It could have taken that long (like they might not be lying), but they shouldnt do that much extra work without consulting you first, I would use that as your arguement. What agreement did you reach prior to them starting the job?

Well it started with their assesment of let's put new fuel lines and a complete fuel rail on it and see if that takes care of it. They did call me later to tell me they found alot of crispy hoses, oil filler tank, and partially toasted harness. I OK'd them to "contiune" repairing the car but if it needed major parts to call me so I could send them vs. having to pay retail from their local dealer. (sent them a replacement harness and could have sent them the plastic oil filler tank but they didn't think it would be too much from their local dealer) I trusted them to keep me informed rather then to just "hit me" with a bill once the car is complete.

I don't want this thread to turn into a gripe and moan session by me...
I just want fellow rennlisters to chime in and make sure I'm being treated fairly when it comes to price...
Here is a breakdown of the invoice I recieved via fax.
**Hard parts**
1 thread valve 008131851a - 44.46
1 Oil Seperator - 944.107.180.09 - 172.58
4 intake gaskets - 4.20
1 timing valve - 951.606.117.00 - 71.26
1 heater valve - 24.64
1 heater hose - 4.00
1 air hose - 951.110.121.01 - 33.70
1 air filter - 14.35
speed and referrence sensors - 311.24
atifreeze - 6.00
1 seal - 999.201.613.40 - 4.47
total - 690.90
Labor is listed as Dismantle and repair only as needed for car to run... - 1600.00
I think the speed/ref sensors and oil seperator are too high and the labor should be UNDER $1000

Well, the oil seperator is crazy. If you had a used one for free, I have a hunch you would have rather put that on than pay $172 for a new one.
The speed and reference sensors sound about right for stealership prices. Getting a good deal on new ones means sub-$100 each, so 1.5 times that for dealership is doing pretty good.
Labor under $1000?.. I dunno, that's pushing it a bit. If the shop did top notch work, I would expect around $1000 in labor. I think $1600 is a little steep. I don't know about down there, but around here, a shop is required by law to give you a written estimate, then to confirm any and all work with you if the total is going to be more than 10% above the written estimate. In this step, they must also provide you with another written estimate for the new total, etc. Perhaps the laws are similar down there.
I guess if you told them to go ahead and fix it you might be stuck, but see if he will work with you on that labor bill, it's pretty outrageous.

I received a similar quote of 25 hours for replacement of similar things you are having done.
...that was assuming it fired up right away....... without major troubleshooting.

The minute you decided to have someone else do the work you were lost
Here is my shot in the dark based on previous experience.
However you must first realize that you go to a shop they will charge you based on a nice pretty book not actual time. Then on top of that retail price for parts!
You just bought an NA car in labor and parts.
new fuel lines (I provided) - Lindsey 1HR
used dampener / FPR / fuel rail / injectors with new seals (I provided) 1-2 HR
used wiring harness(for what?) (I provided)
new magnacor wires (I provided) - Lindsey 30m billed 1 HR
new fuel injector wiring harness (I provided) - Lindsey 1-2 HR
new vacuum lines (I provided) - Lindsey 1-2 HR
new misc rubber boost hoses under manifold 1-2 HR
new breather tank/oil filler tube 4-6 HR
new cycling valve 30m billed 1 HR
new check valve(which check valve?)
new intake manifold gaskets 30m billed 1 HR
new speed sensor
new reference sensor
new heater valve
new heater valve hoses
Fresh coolant / oil / filter 30m billed 1 HR

Thanks John but I tried to arrange for a trasport for 4-5 months before going the route of fixing the car... I don't have enough time from work to drive out there and then drive back with the car on a trailor. I'm going to fly out there and drive it back sometime within the next few weeks. I'm just not happy with the bill. When I initially purchased this car I planned on repairing it myself here in Atlanta. Now I plan on selling it once I bring it back.
