Default Does a 3'' downpipe really make a difference?

Hey,
I've been saving up for the SFR 3" exhaust for a while. I'm about ready to order one but I noticed that you need the special one if you get the 3" downpipe. I want to get the Vitesse Stage III later down the road and am wondering if there will be a need for the downpipe. Otherwise, I'll just get the regular exhaust. Any hp difference with downpipe on Stage II/III cars?
Thanks,
~Josh

good question. I just put in a 3" exhaust and was wondering if I really need the down pipe also.

It's kinda annoying, you need the special exhaust for the 3" downpipe, which you use with an aftermarket turbo. If you still have the stock turbo and want a 3" exhaust, then you have to get the one that doesn't work with the 3" downpipe. Agggg! Am I wrong?

The stock downpipe works on aftermarket turbos, the 3" downpipe is just another upgrade nice to have.

Yeah but the regular 3'' exhaust tapers down to fit the stock downpipe. If you want the 3'' downpipe, then you need the complete full 3'' exhaust.

I guess the important thing would be whether or not the 3'' downpipe gives any gains (8-10+rwhp) with the Vitesse Stage 3. Or any turbo for that matter.

Anyone dyno after the 3'' downpipe?

I guess the better question is what size is the turbine outlet on the Vitesse Stage 3 turbo.

Why dont you just get the cat-back section of the SFR exhaust and then upgrade the rest when you do the Vitesse kit?

Get it, it is good.

You are able to bolt either stock or 3 inch downpipe to Vitesse stag 3 turbo.

The stage III turbos will be backordered for a while anyway, so it gives you a chance to save up. That's what I'm doing.

SFR and Lindsey sell it.

F.Y.I.- A GT series turbo (GT30,GT30R, GT35R) with neccesary hoses and fittings, downpipe, and crossover pipe to make it bolt-on is $2650 from SFR.

Ask the vendor that is selling you the downpipe for a before and after comparison if they have it.
SFR exhaust is very nice, talk to Tim, he's a straight shooter. Maybe you can do the cat-back then do the down-pipe & test pipe at the same time.

I would go with the 3" downpipe, however I personally have no performance data on it.

If you plan on upgrading the turbo, then it will be the time to upgrade the downpipe as well. Replacing the downpipe then redoing the turbo is doubling the work.

I think what the majority really want to know is if ultimatelty does this 10" section (3" versus 2.5") of piping is really worth an extra $450. Does it make an actual hp/performance difference?

just like everyone else in this thread, I can't offer an evidence or dyno tested proof, but I will say that like everything else, your car will only be as strong as its weakest part - in other words if everything else is flowing good, the stock downpipe will be the restriction in the system, and it has been proven that reducing backpressure after the turbo increases power, so I would say to go with the 3" downpipe
