Default Best mod yet! S2 ring and pinion

I just put (actually, I had Karl do it since I have been slammed by work) my '86 LSD tranny that had a S2 ring and pinion gear in my '87 951... HOLY SMOKES! What a difference! It's not the best thing to do for gas mileage, but it sure makes the car a LOT more driveable and "nimble". If I had the choice to do this or add 40hp, getting a S2 r&p in my 951 would win hands down.

This is a "must do" modification as far as I am concerned on any future 951's I own. I might limit my top speed to a *paltry* 155mph or so, but its a pretty bad idea to drive that fast on the street and the local tracks won't support those kind of speeds anyway, and the low end quickness you gain more than makes up for it.

I tentatively have a buyer lined up for the 87 LSD tranny that I pulled out of the car to put this one in, so don't ask... lol If the deal falls through, I will be sure to post it here.

Regards,

Scott, now you need the Stage 2 or 3 and your 951 will be totally transformed. Congratulations.

Few years back I had a 3L 951 with shorter gears AND S2 R&P, it lost top end but acceleration was awesome.

I've been saying it for a while now - nothing better for a US car than S2 R&P.

If you have a stage 2 Vitesse and S2 R&P - you will actually have power FROM A STOP!!!!

Scott,
Forgive my ignorance, but how difficult is it to change the ring and pinion from an S2 tranny to a 951 tranny. I currently have the S2 transmission in my car with the 951 engine. I have an 86 951 transmission with LSD and an external oil cooler, so I was planning on throwing that in when I had the time.

Will my car feel slower with the 951 transmission? If so, how can I swap the ring and pinion? Thanks,

Porsche said the S2 will outrun a 951 up to 40mph, I always wondered how much of that was due to the final drive ratio. Anybody know??

Where would a guy find these parts? Are the S2 ring and pinion gear something a vendor like Paragon would stock?

Changing the R&P is not a simple procedure. You need the proper tools and know how to do it correctly.

Thanks John...Although I've rebuilt my own motor diving into the tranny is something I would get somebody else to tackle. Just wondering where I could acquire the parts.

The R&P from the 'S' is the better choice, it is hardened like the 951.
It is no five minute job though

WRONG!!!

Check your facts my friend.
The S is VERY VERY dfferent from S2. The S2 is much better.
And yes, I have both.

Yes the '944S' R&P is very different from the S2, that is why my mechanic put it in his 951.

Dude - if you meant to say "turbo S", I will let you slide here.

That one is at least as good as the S2.
