Danno once mentioned there were one or more maps in the DME with spark advance and air temp as the parameters. So dont forget that Porsche is taking care of air temp too.

There is no easier and cheaper way to get a knock monitor.
Cheaper, yes, take an op-amp (or maybe two) and a couple of resistors and a capacitor and build an integrating amplifier (really a low pass filter).
Easier, well, that depends on your background. Note to self - learn to program amtel microcontrollers...

Yes, there is a ignition advance correction map that's a function of air temp but in the stock chips the correction is set to zero for all air temps.

NZ, jump in here, and give your 2 cents worth on its merits. Cheap insurance and costs way less than engine repairs.
I can comment here for NZ. Its a VERY good unit. It does what no other piece of software can do, accurately determine what is knock and what is engine noise. The human ear is just that much better than software. All engine noises are different based on age etc, so the ear works well

As for the question, NZ runs 22psi on pump (98 RON) with around 15 degrees of advance. The timing is really something that works hand in hand with this question.

"Inlet air temp has a lot to do with knock sensitivity. In cold weather, you might be able to run 18psi on 85-87 (R+M/2) octane gas."

Same as running water injection. It is always 40 degrees out when WI is used.
