Hmmm, I've got my dash out, I've got a whole bunch of wannabe alcantara/suede sitting around, I'm working on fitting them together. Nothing finished yet, and if I get it done and it looks good Ill A. post photos, B. need to make door panels. Trying to decide if I want to do accents to match my seat (be it Red stiching or a pin stripe or what).

One option to prolong the onset of fading would be some nice 50%, UV blocking tint on the windshield. Shouldn't be so dark that you get pulled over in a heartbeat, but will make leaps and bounds in the fight against the sun. Do 50% on the front half of the cabin and darker in the rear and the front tint will be barely noticeable.

Apparently Alcantara is exactly what they use in rally cars and the like. Here's a VW that had it done...

Yeah I was going to say Alcantara. Might be expensive though... Anyone have a really light tint like Dan suggests... And use sunglasses with it?

My dashboard is mint so far, and I looked for a car with that specifically. The dash cracks are the kind of thing that would just tear me up inside.

Alcantara all the way up the center console, armrest, and on the doors would be really slick. I like this a lot. Only way I could afford it would be to do it myself though. I've got a heat gun so I'm 99% of the way there!

Certainly zero skill necessary for a job like this...

Nearly bought a Ferrari 308 a few years ago that had been very tastefully modified, including a full alcantara dash and door grabs. It looked very nice and the windshield glare was nonexistant - a big problem with 308s. I would do it in a heartbeat, but then my dash is perfect.

If it will help facilitate your dream, I will (reluctantly) trade you my slightly cracked dash for yours. As a favor, I'll even do this straight up.

I am overwhelmed and completely undeserving of your generosity. However I will endeavor to better myself and should I reach that plateau of enlightment, I shall give you a call.

If you sit in a new Boxster, 911, or Cayman, the French stitching on the leather is really nice. They don't use suede, just a nicely grained leather. Some high end Alfas and the new Scaglietti 612 also have nicely stitced French Seams on the leather as well.

DanG is right about the 50% tint on the windshields. This works wonders. I wear sunglasses and at night it's not an issue at all. I get stopped all the time, about two tickets a month sometimes and no one has ever mentioned it. My dash is perfect. It's actually rebuilt, if you will. It cost me 800 dollars from Pelican Parts in Chicago. They needed my dash as a core trade. They had a vendor that completely rebuilt it. TOOK ME EIGHT MONTHS to get it. Would never do business with them again. Now this was 6 years ago and if anyone has done business with them and things have changed, I'd love to know.

Here's a link to what it will cost for a new one(recovered off the shelf). After shipping, you should be able to pull your dash and have it completely professionally redone, locally, for a similar, or better price. Suede wont wear terribly well. Fancy sticthing will cost extra.

I once contacted JustDashes.Com out in CA (http://justdashes.com/nav_dash.htm). Their quote came back at $800 to restore a 944 dash with new vinyl.

Read this. Sandoval got all of his stuff redone in leather. He paid 1500.00 for the dash, door panels, console and shift boot.
