Default Anyone install an SFR FMIC?

After being on the dyno today, I am sure there is some benefit in a bigger IC. Heck, for the ricers its usually the first mod... our community seems a little less keen on this mod though... and I am not entirely sure why. Any feedback would be appreciated, temp drop, pressure drop, HP gain etc.

I have talked with Tim a little bit about the Front Mount intercooler. There would be a lot of benifit on the track I would assume, when the car is running warmer. I think there is less benifit on street driving, but it still keeps the car cooler, and gains hp, so really, its a good upgrade. But I think what it comes down to, is if its worth the money or not.

Thats just my opinion though. Hope that helps a little,

Matt

It would be interesting to see tests as far as how much heat is actually "bled out" before the manifold with different sized intercoolers ... and how the temperature relates to the density of the air and how the density of the air relates to any increase in power.

I am also interested to know how much (any?) benefit ceramic coating/wrapping plays on engine-compartment temperatures (or, more to the point, power in general).

Also, what about increasing the heat transfer/soak efficieny of the STOCK setup by choosing an optimised antifreeze/water/wetter setup?

BTW, if you want the mother-of-all-ICs for the 951, check out the Stage 5 from LR. That and the quite menacing hood modification required.

pstickne,

There is actually a formula for the HP gain by temp, its something like 10 degrees to 1 HP. Something like that. I found a MUCH greater gain on the dyno yesterday when I sprayed the IC with water to cool temps.

PS Skunk has flowed the Lindsey Racing Stage 5 IC, and it flows a lot less than the stock IC, so I think I will give that one a pass.

Actually it is a 1% gain in HP for each 10 degree decrease in the inlet air temp.

I'd also really like to see some empirical data on the SFR FMIC. Looks like a nice peice, but of course I have to wonder about heat soaking the rad. I know Tim says it doesn't, Dave L. says it does etc. Some real world testing would answer this question once and for all.

I know the IC is noted to have a 1.5psi drop (which is really low) and a flow of 700+CFM (which is massive compared to stock). I am datalog everything, but before I look at it, I would be keen to get some other experiences, did TonyG end up getting it? I know he was a big fan of it.

The densitet difference is: (273+T2)/(273+T1) and will be almost the same as the power/torque increase. T is temp in degrees C. So... if you lower the temperature lets say from stock 80 degrees C to about 30 degrees C (that I have at high boost) it will be like this: (273+60)/(273+30)=1,099=+9,9%.

300 hp will be 330... 400 will be 440 and 500 will be 550...

A good IC is a great thing!

where is this flow test? when? where?

a friend of mine who put a LR IC in his car (I think stage 3) said it works better.

"Numbers from the internet"
Inlet temperature = 140° Celsius
Outlet Temperature = 78° Celsius
Temperature Change = 62° Celsius (-55%)
Power output before intercooler = 214rwhp
Power output after intercooler = 273rwhp
Power Change = 59rwhp (+27%)

Using above formula:
(273+140)/(273+78) = 1.176 = ~17.7% increase

17% is not quite 27% but ...

An intercooled engine is a much "happier" engine....
