Question Removal of Oil cooler in front of car- 88 TS

Hi All
I am replacing the radiator w/ the Griffin I bought
And not to deviate from my pattern of whileYourInThereitist
I was wondering would it be a good time to pull the oil cooler and
clean the vents and such ?
Also, I thing I have a slight seal ring leak on the top hose ( there seems to be a Slight oil build up on it )
So the questions are:
-Should I remove it to clean it ?
-And If so what is the procedure ?
-Does anybody have a write up ?
I have looked at Clark's but he doesn't have anything on this...
I want to know whats involved in disconnecting those lines
There seems to be a hard PS line that I want to rip the **** outta of
It's right in the middle of everything ( typical Porsche enginering )
- I also see that one of the 2 rubber bushings at the top is torn but only 1/3

If I remove it, then is a no brainier, but if not should I pull it to replace it ?
Thanks in advance for any advice
Regards
Ed

[B]--Should I remove it to clean it ?[B]
Yeah, it's got years of oil build-up on it. I remove it and fill it with fast thinner (wash thinner) that you can pick up from Auto Zone. Let it soak for an hour then flush it out with water and repeat the procedure. It'll make the inside of it look like new. Be sure to use compressed air to blow out any remaining water before you reinstall it.
[B]-And If so what is the procedure ?[B]
Basically you disconnect the rubber hoses @ the cooler and remove the two M6 bolts that go through the rubber bushings and wiggle that sucker out of there. You can leave the metal hard line attached but it’s a pain to get out (but no less then trying to disconnect it from the cooler). It's a tight squeeze but feasible. The air duct going to the front of the cooler makes it an additional pain.

[B]-Does anybody have a write up ?[B]
Not really needed. It's pretty straight forward.

[B]I want to know what’s involved in disconnecting those lines. There seems to be a hard PS line that I want to rip the **** outta of [B]
The lines are a pain to break loose. I usually heat them up first with a map torch and use the 32mm wrench to break it loose while holding the fitting on the oil cooler side with another wrench (a 27mm IIRC). Be sure to use two wrenches and avoid side pressure or you can strip the cooler or bend the bracket that attaches it to the radiator frame rail.

- I also see that one of the 2 rubber bushings at the top is torn but only 1/3 Not a big deal if it's slightly torn. Once you get it out you'll see why. You can also pick some new ones up from the "HELP" products section at the local auto parts store. Look for GM windshield wiper bushings.

Good luck.

Thanks Jeremy as always
Here we go again
Can't wait to tear into this one

Ed
ps there is a small section of rubber hose that connects the two PS hard lines
Do you think that separated would be enough to squeeze it through ?

Default Oil cooler on 951

I just had the wonderfull experiance of haveing to remove my oil cooler in order
to replace my radiator.. Be warned there is one nut on the clamp that was a PIA
to get back on I have fat fingers and there is not much room the windshield washer tank is placed in the ideal spot to obstruct the clamp niut you are going to need a swivel or two 1/4 inch works well...from your picture it looks like you don't have a plastic shroud around your cooler it should be easier to remove but you still will have to get the cooler over the clamp bolt use a long screw driver to pull the pipe over the cooler to give you the room to pull the cooler over the clamp bolt...Be warned when you have to reinstall the cooler the top 10mm bolt is a PIA
to get back in, I put the bottom bolt in first and swivled the cooler with one hand
and started the top bolt wtith the other...PIA Also there are no decent instructions out there it would have helped if there where some pictures Good luck
and if you need a hand call 408-842-5294...make sure you have a good jackstand..
regards

Default Update

I was lucky so far. I got one of the two lines off
They are a PITA !! I do have a shroud but it was a non issue
I removed the bracing for the PS line and swong the cooler under the PS line
Now I just have one more oil line to deal with. Sadly.its the top one so I can't leave a wrench on the ground while turning the other ...
Thanks for the advice Buckaroo Banzi
Regards
Ed
ps The car's been on jack stands for 7 months

Default Final update

Well
I was really lucky, got it all off
Thanks Jeremy, for the tips ..
I did heat the big nuts with a propane torche for a few seconds
That is, after 2-3 PB Blaster soakings and I heated them up and then sprayed them. This way, there was a capalary action and it draws in the PB Blaster,in, even further as it cools.
I also should have mentoned, I removed the brake duct and the 2 M6 -10mm
bolts that hold the PS zig zag cooling lines that allowed me to push up the PS line while I pulled the Oil cooler and lines under them ... I also remove( all the PS hard line clamp brackets ..I believe there were 2 + the zig zag one ...),
the Tow tie down, and the windshield washer tank ( of course, it was filled to the top !!)
That sucker holds a **** load of fluid !!
Hey Jeremy, one other question
I was going to use some simple green and spray with hot water the on the outside vanes of the cooler. Is that the route to take ? or an over night soak in gas ..?
It's pretty dirty
Best regards
Ed

Some simple green and scrubbing will clean it up. I use a toilet brush (then put it back in the bathroom when the wife's not looking).

Default What now ?

Hey Jeremy
Quick question
I have it all cleaned up inside and out
When I cleaned off the oil cooler, a lot of the black paint chipped off .
What should I do ?:
- Paint it myself and if so any particular type of paint and should I prime it first ...
Maybe that's why it peeled in the first place ....They didn't prime it first ??
- Get it anodized ??
-Get a black heat emitting coating ( so I can spend more of my money on a worthless part )
-Strip it and clear coat it with VHT clear myself ?
-or shove it where the sun doesn't shine
Of course was joking about the last one ..My X shoved enough up there already
Thanks in advance
Regards
Ed
